When a former U.S. president comes to visit, there’s more to it than rolling out the welcome mat — and there will be two presidents here this week.

“There’s definitely a lot of preparation work on the front end,” Palo Duro Canyon State Park Superintendent Cory Evans said.

Bill Clinton will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday at West Texas A&M University’s First United Bank Center. Then George W. Bush will bike the trails of the state park Thursday through Saturday with 20 “wounded warriors” picked for their bravery and sacrifices in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Palo Duro Canyon is a real jewel. It is a state park that is more impressive than many National Parks. It is great for scenery and for wildlife viewing.

A friend and fellow Kiwanian is from Floydada, just south of Palo Duro, and near one of the canyons used by Quanah Parker.

Do they have the site marked in the park where the US Army shot over 300 of the Comanche’s horses?

Doubt it,, but they should. The Comanches were an inhuman nightmare. Destroying any horses they could was a great way to attack them. Horses were their mobility and wealth,,,
Custer did the same thing at Washita,,

And it was well over 1200 horses,, not just 300! And those attacks into the Comanche homeland by the US Army were the beginning of breaking their backs,, and making them into the nice neighbors that they are today!

The Indians as a whole were feared, hated and detested. But from what have read, unless egged on by one white ally or another, every warlike act committed by them was in defense of their homelands.

At Washita, Custer attacked a village of southern Cheyenne and Arapaho there under direction of their Indian agent. The Indian dead were for the most part women and children. After the initial attack, with many Indians from other villages approaching, Custer rapidly and cowardly retreated, leaving his dead and wounded to the tender mercies of the enemy.

Custer also abandoned a unit of 20 men under Major Elliot and they were wiped out to the man.

I will admit that to settle the country and the resulting clash of cultures, what was done to the Indians had to be done in one way or another, For they were a proud warlike people who otherwise would never have succumbed to the will of the whites by so called peaceful methods of the time.
