I own a business in Santa Ana, Ca and spend every day there. By simple observation it is obvious that there is a significant decline in the illegal population. Even the 2010 census shows a major decline in the actual population of the city. What happened to these people? They went back to Mexico. It makes no sense to deny an obvious truth.

I live in San Diego, aka, “Tijuana del Norte”, and I have seen no decline whatsoever in the number of ILLEGAL aliens who have infested this city and county. They continue to trek through my property nightly. The continue to fill their jugs with my hose, pick fruit from my trees and steal eggs from my hen house. They continue to break into my garage and try to hotwire every vehicle on the property. While the number of jobs I frequent may have declined the number of ILLEGALs on those jobs clearly has not. There has been no notable difference in the number of ILLEGAL aliens I see and encounter regularly in both my professional and private life. It makes no sense to ignore that truth.

As long as the penalties for hiring illegals are less than the profits that can be made from using them, business will use them.

http://www.lonestarreport.org/LoneStarReport/BlogArchive/tabid/65/EntryId/378/Pilgrims-Pride-chicken-reaches-immigration-settlement-with-feds-includes-commentary.aspx

Look, these corporation are doing simple math. Pay the fine = a few hundred thousand, use illegals, and make an extra few million.

1. Through the IRS and other means we can easily tell who's hiring them.

2. By increasing penalties and actually pursuing employers, they will stop hiring them.

3. When the jobs and benefits dry up, they disappear.

The effective solution to this issue is to target the employers. They by OSHA, tax and other regulations have to maintain records that would indicate if they are using illegals, if the cost benefit analysis is pushed to the other side even the unethical ones would stop using illegals, and once the money spigot is turned off, they (illegals) will disappear.

The border control is a joke and everyone knows it. These “fence projects” are political maneuvers to appease a base while in reality the same politicians are talking about amnesty or extending social security benefits etc. We have for years been haphazardly and halfheartedly been enforcing our laws. It is not impossible nor even that difficult to gain control of this situation, but NO ONE, Democrat or Republican, is truly pursuing a solution. It's politically damaging because of the Latino vote. So the rest is BS and I wish even Republicans, to include loud mouths like Rick Perry would simply shut up on this issue and stop patronizing me.

Why do businesses today largely follow OSHA and EPA standards? Benevolence?

Because if they dump carbontetracloride into the ground or lake, they will get raped. But if you hire 300 illegals and make a few million doing that, you “might” get a $25,000 - $50,000 fine and not lose any government contracts either. This is a simple business 101 and math problem requiring no more than addition/subtraction and multiplication/division. Go after the employers and the problem will be greatly reduced.

The reason why there are less illegals in the stats now (crossing the border), is because of that exact reason. The benefit for many isn't there. This is all an economically driving issue and you have to approach it that way if you really want to fix it. Posters, petty fines, tough-guy speeches, even a fence, isn't going to do much.
