Obama again breaks promise to commemorate Armenian ‘genocide'

One day after paying a solemn visit to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, President Barack Obama on Tuesday called the mass killings of Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Turks in 1915 "one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century" but again broke a 2008 campaign promise to label the tragedy "genocide."

"We honor the memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who were brutally massacred or marched to their deaths in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire," Obama said in a written statement on Armenian Remembrance Day.

"A full, frank, and just acknowledgement of the facts is in all of our interests. Moving forward with the future cannot be done without reckoning with the facts of the past," Obama said in a implicit appeal for vital American ally Turkey to move closer to recognizing the massacre.

Turkey, a NATO member, fiercely disputes the genocide charge, and has warned that formal U.S. steps to use the term will hamper relations. Turkey's Ambassador to Washington Namik Tan sharply criticized a similar statement from Obama in 2011, taking to Twitter to denounce it as inaccurate, flawed, and one-sided.

didn’t the rats in congress or the senate in 2003 or so put forth the amendment to brand it “Armenian Genocide” purposely to embarrass George Bush who was trying to negotiate with Turkey for use of their bases moving towards the war with Iraq???

Why does we have to weigh in on a century-old event that had nothing to do with the U.S.? I realize politics has its reasons of which reason knows nothing, and it probably will pop up whenever Turkey is in the news. But it always makes me wonder when Congress is gonna pass a resolution against Rameses II, or which side Obama comes down on concerning the War of the Roses.

A broken clock....

In four years of Obama, this might be the first time that I could type: HRYK. Now if he'll do something about the Sudan where the same thing is going on RIGHT NOW.

Exactly,,, that old world crap needs to stay in the old county. We endure a lot of BS at the hands of immigrants who want to keep up old angers. Personally, I couldn’t give a tinkers damn about which british king starved which Irish, what Armenians and Turks had going on, why hutus hate tutsis, or anything about the Balkans,,,etc.
Its only a historical curiosity to read about. But if someone moves to America, they need to be well instructed to leave they’re crap behind.

Bring your music, literature, clothing, work ethic, food, and hot women,,,, all the rest stays there. Its amazing that this is a policy issue. We should just tell both sides to stfu,,, and then tell them what is important to us.
