Nasa releases stunning time-lapse video of Earth

'A mesmerising time-lapse video showing how Earth looks from space has been wowing the Web.

Nasa released the awe-inspiring footage which features a series of time-lapse sequences photographed by the Expedition 30 crew on board the International Space Station.

The clip, which plays to the haunting tune of ‘Walking in the Air’ by Howard Blake, begins over the southern United States at an altitude of 240 miles and finishes in Europe.

Stunning imagery from the Aurora Australis over the Indian Ocean to lightning storms in Africa, shows the planet in all its glory.

Heavily populated urban areas can be seen beautifully lit up in the dark of night.

The footage was put together using time-lapse photography, where the frequency at which the images are captured is much slower than that at which they are played back, giving the impression that the images are moving.'

That would look FANTASTIC on an IMAX screen. The people that have had the good fortune to have that kind of ringside seat to all of that are truly blessed. And to think there have been only 530-some odd of them to have had that view.

I’ve sat for hours watching the downlink video form the ISS external cameras in the Mission Engineering Room. At all times when in contact with satellites, ISS downlinks four camera views. It is fascinating. Not as pretty as this video, but certainly quality that would be acceptable on U-Tube. Pity the public can’t tune in and watch at will.

I’m too stupid to figure that out since it just flips from one list to another.

The feds never make anything simple and just click and go.

What magic does one have to know do get the file? Is it only for windows?

Not much really "new" about this. "Many such journeys are possible."

The Coppola has opened up a new window. http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/

LOL @ all the libtard comments below the video. Literally almost every one of them some variation of how warmongers are killing the planet or how the city lights look like a cancer.

It’s symptomatic of the progressive disease to find sadness in beauty, bitterness in triumph, or emptiness in lieu of gratitude for our blessings.

Wow, when did NASA get back into the space business? Last I heard, Zero had reassigned them to be the head cheerleader for Islam.

This makes me wonder if there’s any satellite or aerial imagery of the United States as the night of July 4 unfolds. I bet it’s spectacular from above.
