the factories were much too big for the production floor space in use.

I just started doing work for a company like this. They moved from their previous facility because they obtained a very favorable lease.

Yeah, that possibility occured to me as well: maybe they got a fantastic deal on a huge facility, and were expecting to grow.

The Beacon facility looked brand-new; I'm not sure about the Solyndra location.

I personally know of a huge vacant factory in upstate NY that's vacant. I'll bet it could be had for a song. The local "Industrial Development Authority" is trying to find someone to move in.

Maybe that's the explanation. For both.
