Interesting. I was unfamiliar with the gyrojets. But a lot of 1960s technology failed solely because they lacked more advanced materials. I imagine if a similar system was tried today it would likely have a lot more success.

I know that the XM-25 grenade launcher and rounds are pretty astounding in either offense or defense. Not a weapon I would want to go up against. Lots of rave reviews from Afghanistan. When I first heard of the 25mm grenade I was very skeptical, comparing them with the old classic 40mm which I was quite fond of.

Something like that mounted on a UAV, maybe even a larger round, could be a real nightmare against surface forces.

Three big problems with the Gyrojet:

1. It took a couple of feet to accelerate to speed, so a hand placed against the muzzle could stop a round.

2. Inaccurate at distance. Groups reported of 8 inches at 10 yards.

3. Expensive to produce ammunition.

It is possible that to-days technology could overcome these issues, but it is hard to beat conventional ammo.

Your idea of something like 25mm grenades launched from a UAV has promise.

But I’m sure he had a blast trying it.

I still think it’s very doable. Precision computer controlled motion stabilization has reached amazing heights, well within reach of the hobbyist. I’m sure a bunch of people are inspired to try it now, and we’ll see hyperventilating news stories about the results in a few months.
