Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans determined to show women voters that they have their interests at heart on Wednesday announced plans to renew the Violence Against Women Act, the federal government's main domestic violence program.

The GOP proposal set up a possible showdown with a somewhat different version that Senate Democrats have advanced and has been pending for several weeks. The Senate began debate Wednesday on the Democratic version as talks continued.

VAWA, first enacted in 1994, has a history of being bipartisan and noncontroversial, but that's changed this election year. Democrats have accused Republicans of waging a war on women, and Republicans, led by presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have responded by emphasizing their sensitivity to women's issues.

The Senate bill has 61 sponsors, including eight Republicans, but parts of it have met resistance from others in the GOP.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, joined by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, is preparing an alternative that would eliminate several Democratic provisions, including those to set aside visas for illegal immigrants who are victims of domestic abuse, specify that violence against gays, lesbians and transgenders are part of the act and expand the authority of Native American officials in cases of abuse of Indian women by nonIndians.

Good grief! Which article and section of the Constitution do they feel authorizes them to do this?

specify that violence against gays, lesbians and transgenders are part of the act

So, why isn't the AP headline something like:

"Senate Democrats want American law to treat gay men as women"?

Why aren't conservative sites running with that headline?

And BTW, I guess that "equal protection of the law" went down the drain a long time ago.

Constitution? They don’t need no stinking Constitution.
Republicans, like the socialist arm of the ruling class, they could not care any less about the Constitution.
Just look at what they have done to this once great nation over the past 100 years.

"House Republicans...announced plans to renew the Violence Against Women Act,..."

Very anti-Second-Amendment. If you're accused of domestic violence (not convicted) and receive a permanent restraining order (no conviction required at all), don't be caught at any time in the rest of your life with any firearm or ammo. Five years in federal prison, mandatory.

Have fun. Enjoy the bipartisan politics, economic slide and whatever. The political/regulator class will not allow your family to compete (or to even continue being a family). No sale, no vote.
