Canadians make a racket about mysterious 'hum' coming from US side of border

WINDSOR, Ontario – Last month, Bob Dechert, a senior aide to Canada's foreign minister, was dispatched to Detroit with an important diplomatic mission: to stop a highly-annoying noise.

The so-called Windsor hum, described as a low-frequency rumbling sound, has rattled windows and knocked objects off shelves in this border community just across the Detroit River from the Motor City. Locals have said it sounds like a large diesel truck idling, a loud boom box or the bass vocals of Barry White.

Residents in Windsor, Ontario, have blamed the hum for causing illness, whipping dogs into frenzies, keeping cats housebound and sending goldfish to the surface in backyard ponds. Many have resorted to switching on their furnace fan all season to drown out the noise.

Even weirder, Americans cannot seem to hear it. Canadians find that suspicious -- especially since their research suggests the hum is coming from the Yankees' side -- and accuse US officials of staying silent over the noise.

The last time I was in Windsor, 49 years ago, I didn’t hear any hum. I think the residents of Windsor are making this up. (smirk)

It’s either due to fracking or to the salt mines under the river collapsing.

It’s the sound of Sharia taking over Canada.

They are connecting Deep underground military bases. They have been working on these for years.

I’ve been reading reports of these “sounds” (varying discriptions of them) being heard all around the world.

No one seem to have a clue of their origin. Rather odd.

Ha, ha, no, I was only thirteen at the time and on a family vacation. I had a lot of relatives including my grandparents who lived in and around Detroit. We crossed over the Ambassador Bridge and drove around for about an hour and crossed back. All I can remember is seeing a doubledecker bus and billboards for Players cigarettes.

Once I started looking at the You Tube videos, I saw, like you said, that this is happening all over the world. The sounds are often very similar, and some people say they come from the sky, not the ground. Many guesses about what they are are floating around, but no concrete answer.

Tunneling in under Ontario from the salt mines under Detroit and lake Erie.

“hey, the only words we know are “Oh, Canada...” everything after that is mumbling and humming. :)”

From a great Canadian TV show “Royal Canadian AirFarce” the next words are:

“Oh, Canada, a vast and empty land.”

Wish I could remember the rest but it was good natured ribbing of Canadians by Canadians. Damned good neighbors to have by the way even though they tend to be a little more liberal.

They only hear it because they use the metric system up there. When you convert the decibels into english, the hum goes away. Don’t even ask me about how it sounds in Quebec!

Here is another version of the Canadian anthem from the Royal Canadian Air Farce.

That's odd. In the video posted by Lucky9teen in comment #12 (about 3/4ths of the way through the video), they quote a Windsor city official who said they have received hundreds of complaints, and he personally experienced it himself when he went to a certain part of town in the middle of the night.

It creeps me out, regardless. I don't like mysteries, unless they're hardback fiction.
