Rather was right.
The piece of paper was accurate(or genuine) but the contents were fake.
Remember to liberals it is what’s on the outside that counts.
Well, that’s my point. They didn’t even make an effort to make them look right. Hence, my calling them “crude,” as in lack of serious effort.

He says people tried to ruin his career by telling lies about him. Yet he spread lies to tear down Bush’s career. Is it ok to laugh now or am I missing something?

Well, that's partially true. The lies from the "anonymous" partisans were the forged Texas Air National Guard memos. The problem was that Rather ran with the lies rather than investigating them. Back in the pre-Internet days he could have gotten away with it, but knowledgeable people recognized that the fonts and formats weren't proper for military memos of the time but instead matched with the default Microsoft Word settings, even down to the peculiarities of when the "th" would be superscripted, and were able to publicize those flaws before that night was over.
Just imagine how different this story would have been if Rather had just read from the alleged memos with some Chyron graphics of the "relevant" parts of the text over a background of some blurry, low-res pages on the screen. But CBS posted scans of the memos for everyone to look at and analyze. Hopefully news reports will move more in that direction of reporting the news but posting the full supporting information and raw videos immediately. Instead I expect that they will learn the wrong lesson and stop releasing the proof and leave the two minute news report to stand on its own to hide the trail of evidence of their lies and half-truths.
When anonymous partisans use discreditable material to impugn George Bush, that’s “news reporting.” But when that falsified material is exposed as fraudulent, then the truth becomes “lies.”
It’s no wonder Rather became a journalist. Other than Wonderland, there’s no other place where up is down, wrong is right, and darkness is light.

That's what I hear, although I think even Murrow was overrated. The problem with any assertions about the veracity and integrity of alleged "gold standards" such as CBS News and the New York Times is that we really have no idea how often or how brazenly they lied to promote the Democrat / socialist agenda. It has only been 15 years or so that the internet has been around to police the dirty bastards.
I may be misunderstanding your post. I've read it a few times and pride myself on being objective. But Dan Rather pressed the story. The initial information he was given by a secrete source may have spurred the idea. But Rather was reported to have pitched and produced the story that got him where he was. Remember, the story came out in the heat of an election cycle. After questions arose and no corroborating evidence could be produced and several folks came forward to say the information was false, Rather doubled down. He wielded a great deal of influence at the network. He was not innocent of just reading what someone put on a teleprompter. He took credit for the investigative reporting that "broke" the story. It was his source. He had ample opportunity to correct the story or move it in a different direction. I doubt anyone counseled him to say the document was "fake but accurate." Whether he owned the story at the beginning or not, he took ownership of it when he stubbornly and repeatedly tried to defend it.
He doesn't get a pass from me. He was fired because his credibility was gone and it severely diminished the credibility of his employer. They stood by him at first and when the story was obviously fabricated, they dumped him.
If it were any other way, Rather would have placed blame on his employer for forcing him to report the fabrication based on shady sources and forged documents. He would have thrown orphaned children under the bus to save his pride and career. Fortunately, there were no children within reach after he dug himself a crater.

Understandably and to his credit, Murrow never forgot these early years in the Southern and Western United States and his family’s background as workers and farmers. Throughout, he stayed sympathetic to the problems of the working class and the poor. Characteristic of this were his early sympathies for the Wobblies (Industrial Workers of the World) 1920s, although it remains unclear whether Edward R. Murrow ever joined the IWW.
To: HowlinHowlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman.
In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts.
The use of proportionally spaced fonts did not come into common use for office memos until the introduction of laser printers, word processing software, and personal computers. They were not widespread until the mid to late 90's. Before then, you needed typesetting equipment, and that wasn't used for personal memos to file. Even the Wang systems that were dominant in the mid 80's used monospaced fonts.
I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old.
This should be pursued aggressively.
