They have the same problem as we do. Neither of us fight the way we should anymore. You must crush your enemy. None of this non proportional response worries.William Tecumseh Sherman, Sir Arthur Harris, and many others would have been prosecuted for war crimes in this day and age.
As I recall, Curtis Lamay said that had the allies lost the war, he would have been prosecuted for "war crimes" as well.

There was a show on PBS talking about the bombing of Germany, that discussed the decisions made by Harris, LeMay, and others, and one of the analysts/historians said that on the allied side, the only crime greater than the bombing of civilian Germans would have been losing the war to Germany.
Surprisingly insightful comment that summed it up nicely. It's very hard for those opposed to the bombing to argue with that logic.
