Tallahassee, Florida (Reuters) - Florida Governor Rick Scott has shot down a request by Tampa's mayor to allow local authorities to ban guns from the city's downtown during the Republican National Convention in August.
Citing Second Amendment protections in the U.S. Constitution, Scott told Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn that conventions and guns have co-existed since the nation's birth and would continue to do so during the four-day event beginning August 27.
"It is unclear how disarming law abiding citizens would better protect them from the dangers and threats posed by those who would flout the law," the Republican governor said in a letter on Tuesday.

Buckhorn has pissed a lot of people off here in Tampa.
Gov. Scott is a good man. I urge everyone to read Buckhorn’s disgusting letter to Rick Scott claiming that his request meets the “spirit of the exemptions” outlined in the FL CCW statute.
Spirit of the exemptions? There are dozens of smarmy Miami-Dade politicians ready to jump on that to bring back gun bans in parks and many other places. Gov. Scott prevented a can of worms from being opened.
Wanna bet the WH asked the mayor to make that “request”?
I love it.
Dan, I’ve tried to locate Buckhorn’s letter but have been unsuccessful. I did find and read Gov. Scott’s excellent reply. Can you provide a link?
Wouldn’t need to be the WH. The RNC and the presumed nominee are anti-gun as well.
The OWS thugs will now have to realize that many of the Republicans they may desire to harass will be armed. And Florida has wide reciprocity with other states.
One vote for quote of the day!
Sould be the response to every libtard's anti-gun screed.
GO GOVERNOR SCOTT!
I and many Florida citizens love Governor Scott and all he has done here in Florida. You can count on Governor Scott to honor our 2nd Amendment!

Right to carry means anywhere in Florida, Rick Scott is the Man.
