APRIL 27, 2012, APPLE RIVER, IL – The little town of Apple River in northeast Jo Daviess County, Illinois is the hometown of a big man - Terrence Ingram. Though not big in a physical sense, when it comes to saving the American Bald Eagle, there is hardly anyone in the United States held in higher regard than Ingram. His years of documented research and expertise regarding eagles and the work of the Eagle Nature Foundation, founded by Ingram, is in great part responsible for the bald eagle being removed from the “Threatened Species List “ in the United States.
Unfortunately, it was not his knowledge of eagles that the Illinois Department of Agriculture sought when they paid an unannounced visit to his home in March. It was his bees.
In the March 21, 2012 issue, The Prairie Advocate published a news release from Ingram that reported the theft of $5000 of his bees and bee hives on March 14. Ingram said that before they left had left for their granddaughter’s wedding in Texas, the hives had been cleaned and made ready for new spring swarms.
I received a phone call from an area County Farm Bureau manager about the article, asking how I had come across the information. He knew that the equipment was not stolen, but “destroyed” by the Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDofA). The hives were infected with foulbrood, and Ingram was doing nothing about it.

It sounds as if the motivation of the DoA buffoons was not to kill the bees, but to steal the potentially RoundUp-resistant queen. Ingram is right: they could have simply came in and stolen something worth billions.
I was unaware of the sensitivity of honeybees to RoundUp. That can’t be a good thing in areas that do huge amounts of broadcast spraying of the stuff...
I'd be suspicious that somebody in the agency didn't like what he'd said in some earlier situation and decided to "show him"~ the place for the lawyers to start would be?
When we ignore that maxim entire societies can die ~ not just bee colonies and the fields of plants they fertilize ~ but let's say THE HOMOSEXUALS. The judges and lawgivers provided AIDS, a dangerous virus, with CIVIL RIGHTS.
The article referenced pretty much provides only one side of the situation ~ but he is getting a hearing.
A totalitarian regime would have probably burned everything around there to the ground, not just the bee hive boxes ~ this is a fairly disastrous disease.

The ‘sources’ blaming Roundup for hive death are all private bloggers or talk shows. They are always in need of some new secret killer to sensationalize. I applied Roundup to my entire yard two years ago. My 2” long bumble bees are still flying. They seem unaffected.
Makes sense. The chemtrails-Nemesis-fill-in-the-blank folks can be a little jumpy.
I have never used RoundUp as a broadcast, just on poison ivy and Chinese Tallow. Both are tough items to kill. In my area, there are no agricultural operations that utilize RoundUp as a broadcast either, so I have no baseline on effects. I have had a beekeeper place hives out in my pastures and have had some fine honey through the years from them, so I do have some small experience with bees. Emphasis on the small.

Thank you for that information, I will pass that on to the reporter and see that it gets to the owner. He is devastated by the whole affair. I think what has struck him so hard is the lack of appreciation for private property that has been shown him. And, the fact remains that he is truly much more of an expert on the health of the bees than the government nitwit is...
I don’t think the government inspector knew much about bees and it is amazing that they would do this act prior to the hearing when dealing with someone with so much knowledge and experience as the bee owner has.
It is just another true travesty that our government is slamming down on us. The injustice is incredible and unfortunately we are falling into the same trap as those who suffered under Nazism and Communism of believing that it doesn’t affect us when it is happening to someone else...
I think the start for the lawyers would be the lack of due process...they committed their act prior to the hearing which was to establish if there were legal right and need to remove the bees. We have a right to own property and we have a right to due process of the law...that means we get our day in hearing and indeed, in court if we do not like what they do in the hearing.
The owner of the bees (a respected expert) is saying that his bees were not diseased, indeed he had been doing long term research into developing a Round Up resistant bee. The government nitwit is probably not an expert in bees and in any event we each have a right to due process...they deprived him of that by stealing his bees prior to the hearing.
This affects each and every one of us when we give that kind of power to government workers who are not elected by the people, do not truly answer to congress on these day to day actions and they ignore due process and property rights.
A tyrannical government acts exactly as they did in this case. That is the point of the story.
You live on a small parcel probably compared to spraying several hundred acres at one shot and probably do not use the same concentration as most farmers. The reason that is important is that your neighbors most likely did not spray at the same time as you, but in farm country thousands of acres are sprayed at a time...how would you even know if you killed or didn’t kill bees with your spraying? Your parcel even if five to ten acres is too small to stop bees from neighboring land from flying over after you have sprayed.
If you check...cancer rates are much higher for farmers than for other people. Due to the exposure every year from these safe chemicals. I have little doubt that bees and other insects and bugs, not to mention animals, get sick from exposure over time to these chemicals. I have a small river that runs through my property. Prior to the chemical spraying it had wild trout in it. The trout disappeared after farmers began using chemical fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides.
No one is saying to stop using the chemicals in this story...the expert bee owner was trying to develop bees more resistant to these chemicals. That is worthy research...he was doing with his own money by the way...
These days we hardly ever hear of quarantine ~ yet, not so long ago if you'd come down with a scabrous skin disorder you might well be imprisoned or burned at the stake.
After most of the day to think about this case I realized the disease they are concerned with is much like AIDS. It uses the bees' own sanitary practices and immunologic reactions to infiltrate its way into every hexagonal space in the hive thereby increasing the odds that it, if not the bees, will survive!
I think that once you bring bees out of the wild and into domestication you become responsible for protecting all of them from unnecessary death at the hands(lobes) of disease germs.
I know my bees rise up to hover even with my eyes and buzz at me and I don't pass until they turn around and fly off somewhere else. But they are wild animals and I owe them nothing, and they owe me nothing, but if I had to protect some by burning out the others, that's the way it'd be.

I hope he gets some legal assistance with this. The fact that his hives were taken when he was gone sure seems to indicate foul play. IMHO, his rights were knowingly violated.
Odds are good they had the guys phone number or how to reach him otherwise.
Regarding his "research" you can start imagining things about bees ~ and they're probably true. Some bees, not all bees, are supposed to be able to think using quantum physical processes ~ turns their little teeny tiny brains into super computers (if you want to believe that) where they ponder deep philosophical questions about how to integrate the five principles of communications theory with the math supporting quantum physics ~ again, if you want to believe that.
In the meantime they make honey.
I love honey. I talk to bees ~ whether they understand me or not. They might. I'm sure the victim in this case talks to them as well
While I do not personally know the beekeeper in this case, I do know the reporter...he is actually the owner of the small paper. He is outraged and would not be if it were not very clear to him that this man’s rights have been violated.
This beekeeper is a long term expert in raising bees, I am sure he has destroyed hives in his past if they needed it. He is a very responsible and knowledgeable man who is held in high esteem in the area.
I do not disagree that government has a legal right and duty, if you will, to protect the public or public good from disease...within reason. But, they do not have the right to steal property nor deprive anyone of their right to due process and that is the issue here. The beekeeper is presumably more knowledgeable about the health of his bees than the government inspector...keep that in mind. This isn’t a hobbyist...he was/is a professional beekeeper.
