Unions had their place back when companies would abuse workers on a basic human rights level, not just this "worker's rights' that they keep making more up as they go, mostly just to make money for the union. The union needs to be fighting for worker's actual needs (and also for the company's!) without making the union leadership ridiculously wealthy, donating millions to Democrats, etc.

There's a difference between paying pennies a day, workers killed at work, etc, and the 'we need $40/hr, full health/retirement benefits!' arguments of today.

Try reading Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, and you'll see the difference between then and now.

I once worked for a place that I found abusive. After two weeks, I quit, and got another job elsewhere.

What stopped workplace abuse was not the union -- it was the automobile. When there was just one employer within walking distance, like in the old factory and mining towns, changing employers meant having to move away. Now, most people have hundreds of potential employers within easy commute distance.

Incidentally, regarding the place I quit after two weeks -- the reason WHY I found it abusive was BECAUSE it was unionized.
