It is too bad the World War II battleship USS Missouri was not available, being as it is tied up in mothballs in Hawaii where it serves as a museum.
Otherwise President Barack Obama could have held his Kabul signing ceremony with Afghan President Hamid Karzai aboard the battle-hardened ship, as Gen. Douglas MacArthur did Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay after the defeat of the Japanese in World War II.
You will recall the iconic photo -- if World War II history is still being taught in school, that is -- of MacArthur commanding and witnessing the signing of the surrender documents by Japanese generals and diplomats as he concluded the end of the long and bitter war, a war that we won, by the way.
