One of the first things I’ve done in every house I’ve owned is buy a lock set and long screws for the doors. Then, I’ve reinforced the frame where necessary. No, it won’t stop a battering ram, but nobody will make one of my doors open with a kick or a shoulder. If they did, they’d find I would not politely ask them to lay down. It is very unlikely that somebody, especially somebody drunk will do what you “ask” them to. This guy was lucky, but the woman is even luckier. Most people will not pull the trigger. There is a fantastic book telling why; “On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society” by Dave Grossman.

If you’re going to carry a gun, this book is a must read. Most people do something called “display behavior.” They fire with no intent of hitting the target. Essentially, they’re cats fluffing big and hissing. A real intruder is past any possibility of being deterred by display behavior. I believe this is why the police can fire 84 times and not hit the target. They are psychologically unable to kill, even in their own defense.

I have metal doors with stong door-frames. I happen to be lucky enough to live in a house that my dad rebuilt.

No-one will kick open or shoulder open my doors.

I will research the book. Thank you.

The only legal means to train to kill without remorse is to hunt. Let me give you an example from last fall.

My brother and I had just taken a large doe when a fawn suddenly popped up behind it. Now we are going to leave a fawn in the field and my first shot knocked it down. As I cautiously went closer it jumped up and hobbled off ahead of me.

So here I was loaded down with gear, trying not to run but walking in an determined manner after my prey like the T-1000 Terminator. The terrified fawn has its ears pinned back and is making every attempt it can to get away.

It still amazes me how much a living being will fight until .40 S&W meets Medulla Oblongata.
