FORT WAYNE, Ind. The tea party upstart who is trying to dislodge one of the U.S. Senate's most respected Republicans is about to cry.
Minutes into his stump speech at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner here, as hundreds of Republicans poke at chicken and mini-potatoes, Richard Mourdock chokes up, his voice cracking over the sound system, all the way to the bar at the back of the room.
"Honestly, as I look at our nation's capital, I feel more frustrated with Republicans than Democrats," says Mourdock, the Indiana state treasurer. But "bipartisanship has taken us to the brink of bankruptcy. It is not bipartisanship we need; it is principle."
The audience bursts into applause.
This is the kind of conservative zeal that some voters say has been missing from longtime Sen.Richard G. Lugar, the 80-year-old elder statesman who is now in the fight of his political life.
The six-term Republican senator has been the pride of the Hoosier State, but the close race for Tuesday's primary shows the dangers of a career built on political pragmatism at a time of conservative ascendancy. Some polls show Mourdock leading the senator.

The Democrats and the establishment as well as the McCain RINO Wing are all in a panic because if Lugar is indeed bump off, they know Hatch might be next.
Personally, I WANT all of the Senators and Representatives and, especially, the President of the country to feel passion when considering this country and its future.
The LAT only feels passion for people like Bawney Fwank.
Couldn’t help but notice that unbiased tone to the article. Must be a Leftist writing in a Leftist rag.
Bye bye gun grabber Lugar!
RINO Cave-In is THE way that the Democrats are able to destroy America.
...longtime Sen.Richard G. Lugar, the 80-year-old elder statesman...
The six-term Republican senator has been the pride of the Hoosier State...
Lugar is "respected" by the Democrat newsrooms only because he plays nice with their liberals. They now (only now) call him an "elder statesman" for the same reason. (I wonder why they don't just call him a "maverick" and be done with it?) And why on earth does this columnist dub Lugar "the pride of the Hoosier State"? First I heard that, so I am guessing the columnist, Lisa Mascaro, simply made it up on the fly.
What a diaper load this column is. It reads like it was handed to Mascaro by the GOP establishment elite.
“PINGO!”
We may not have been able to stop Romney, but we can make sure that the Congress is full of Conservative, even if Obama wins, he can sign all the Executive Orders, he like, but if the funding is not there, then they are nothing more than useless pieces of paper.
I could not agree more.
If Mourdock does win, it will galvanize conservatives in Texas for Cruz and galvanize conservatives against Hatch in Utah.
Lugar has gotten so desperate, he’s courting RAT votes and independents.
It’s way past time to close GOP primaries to only GOP voters in ALL States!
GO TELL IT FROM THE MOUNTAIN! Loud and clear for all to hear.
I have been screaming about this for years...why the hell do we allow DEMOCRATS to choose Republican candidates?
“I have been screaming about this for years...why the hell do we allow DEMOCRATS to choose Republican candidates? “
These “open” primaries only serve the GOPe and RINO’s.
It is their last line of defense against conservatives, as
clearly demostrated by Lugar.
When a GOP candidate starts begging for RAT votes and independents, the system NEEDS to be changed. I’m not sure
how that works, but I’m guessing rules are set up by the state GOP. It looks like the Tea Party is going to have to clean house in the State GOP elites as well.
You are absolutely right...the state organizations are the problem, butI am sure the national outfit applies a great deal of 'pressure'.
Lugar is 80...let it go, man.
