The end of the line for Minnesota's coal plants?

Sherburne County Generating Station, better known as Sherco, is a power-producing workhorse.

But even good workhorses head to the glue factory eventually.

The 2,400 megawatt coal-fired plant in Becker, 45 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, has generated the bulk of Xcel Energy's electricity for Minnesota for more than three decades.

End of the line for inexpensive electricity for Minnesota ratepayers.

They’ll regret it when they get a real cold winter and space heaters eat up the juice.

First the Monticello nuclear plant is slated to be shut down, with no future of any new nuclear plant thanks to the DFL in St. Paul. Now the Sherburne coal plants. And the Minneapolis Lefties will fight the natural gas plants as well since the natural gas coming from eeevvvilll fracking (no doubt supported by the eeeevvvilllll Koch Brothers). So good for Minneapolis. May that city fall into a pre-industrial darkness. There will be no Skittles crapping unicorns to supply its energy.

A warm winter is an anomaly in most parts of Minnesota.

Barack Obama’s original quote, which came from a videotaped interview he did with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board very early in the presidential campaign, January 2008.

“Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket,” Obama told the Chronicle . “Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.”

I think what Hussein meant was they will pass on the “cost” to consumers. But yeah, he’s a genius.

Yes, but there will be Skittles crapping Trayvons to prey upon the white liberals during the long months of darkness.

Rolling blackouts and the resulting inability of many Americans to watch TV, surf the Web, or play with their smart phones just might be the ticket to wake them up.

Or not...

We are losing three plants in my area. Age and the EPA. Now there is a formula for disaster. It may not be immediate but an energy policy that shuts down the most available and inexpensive energy source for reasons that are at best questionable is not a policy “we the people” should stand for.

The power generators are well aware of the insanity on display by those with no skin in the game, namely the unaccountable bureaucrats at the EPA. It is just amazing, is it not what long nose busy body, in your face bureaucrats with the blessing of leftists in government, are willing to do to the American people they are tasked to “serve”.

But, but, I thought all this “nasty” energy created from coal would be replaced by wind farms and solar panels...no, uuuuhhh, what happens now...can we burn wood to keep warm? No, too nasty, too.

Well, anyway it someone else’s problem. All I have to do is “plug it in to the little holes” and all will be well...no, my bill will be so high I will only get to watch TV as the ice forms on the inside of the window panes...what a stupid bunch of people in charge now.

A lot of public broadcasting comes out of St. Paul. Maybe they’ll face reality in the long, cold dark.

Methinks the RATs have really dodged a bullet here. The Natural Gas renaissance brought on by fracking will soften if not completely mask the blow that Obama’s coal policies will wreak. To the extent that only the United Mine Workers feel the pain I say, “it serves you right.” Perhaps this will buy the time necessary for “clean coal” to mature. But all this comes in spite of, not because of, Obama’s policies.

The other evil is doing these shut downs right before the peak demand in many places, in the summer.

Being holier than thou and better than everyone else, they will bravely run (as covertly as possible) their own private power generators. The propaganda must flow after all.

Can these plants all be brought back online once a Republican is in charge?

‘Environmentalists have been clamoring to shut down Hoot Lake. The company estimates it could cost $40 million to install the technology needed to meet EPA requirements, but building a modern natural gas plant to replace it could cost even more....’

I wonder if the EPA has given a thought to the lost jobs and incomes and the dislocations they are wreaking ....maybe they should assume the cost of providing livlihoods to the folks they displace or maybe they should postpone shutdowns unless and until the gas fired replacements can come on line on a timeline that makes economic sense....to everyone involved....i think they are supposed to be working for the people not the other way around.....pretty sad..

This is just more bullshit abound.
Energy is energy. It costs money. If you take coal out of the picture, then its greater demand on the alternates,,,,, boiling down, along the path to higher energy as more are competing for it..... and, greater gas pump prices for all!
Increased costs will be in our fertilizers, fuel, food, anything plastic.....

Obama needs to quit the intermeddling in areas he knows nothing about.

Is China going to cut coal consumption????
IS India?
How about any of the other G20?
So why should he impose this on America???
