Orange Confidential: Government Center draws empassioned crowd

The Orange County Legislature, at a meeting Thursday, ultimately voted no to a $14.6 million bond that would have led to tearing down the Orange County Government Center, which was designed by Paul Rudolph.

But not before Legislator Kevin Hines had this to say: "People here from The Paul Rudolph Foundation, I feel we owe you nothing. Paul Rudolph delivered us a substandard product in my mind, and I have absolutely no love for that building. They talk about it being emotional. For me, it's not emotional — it's a building. We need a building to do our business. Can the building be made functional? At this point, I think not, but maybe others will have better ideas."

Despite Hines' statement, the meeting was a passionate one for many — and a mini-history lesson as well.

The public invoked the names of historical heavyweights such as the Founding Fathers, Muhammad Ali, Attila the Hun and Nero before the meeting ended. Also mentioned: Waterloo and Athens.

This building has been controversial ever since ground was broken over 40 yrs. ago. This out-of-place eyesore, has been plagued with problems since it was completed, leaking roofs, mold, asbestos. BTW it's ironic that the architect who designed this mess, Paul Rudolph died of mesothelioma. I say if the Rudolph foundation and others in the "artsy-fartsy" community want this monstrosity refurbished, let THEM come up with the tens of millions needed. That should be chump change to these 1%ers.
