A look at economic developments and activity in major stock markets around the world Monday:
___

PARIS — The day after Francois Hollande rode to power in France on a slogan of "change now," the conversation in Europe is already different: Austerity has become a dirty word.

**SNIP**

MADRID — Spain's prime minister said the government will likely present important bank clean-up measures this week to clear up doubts about the solvency of the sector, a key source of worry over whether Spain might need a financial bailout.

Bottom line: Germany turns its back on debt ridden Europe and pivots its economic attention toward the boundless resources of Russia. The EU and euro are doomed.

The day after Francois Hollande rode to power in France on a slogan of "change now," the conversation in Europe is already different...

Wow.
That sounds so familiar... Let me think.
I got it! someone said it on Aug 24, 79 A.D. in Pompeii, when a nearby mountain started rumbling... wait. No that can't be it.

Maybe it was in Shaanxi China, when, on Jan 23, 1566 things started moving a little...

Or perhaps also when on June 7, 1692 a tiny earthquake made Port Royale Jamaica disappear from maps forever... Nope. that can't be it

I got it!
It was Sept 8, 1900, just before the tiny Galveston, Texas event... well, yes but there's a better bigger one.

This has got to be it. Paris, Sept 30, 1938, when, at the airport, Chamberlain announced "Peace in our time!" What a doofus!

No. the greatest disaster is lost to memory, sometime in 2007 or 2008 when an obscure, unknown, undocument community activist first uttered the magic words, "Hope and Change!"
Yeah that's it.

Whatever happened to him?

Not a chance, not anytime soon anyway. European socialism will muddle along for awhile longer, they can still kick the can down the road a bit further. No one much cares about the future, it's all about the present. Greece will probably demand concessions, and they will get them. European governments know that Greece defaulting and/or leaving the Euro would start the domino's falling, and they are simply not prepared to allow that to happen. Not yet anyway. There hasn't even been any real austerity in France anyway (other than raising the retirement age from 60 to a whopping 62). Europeans are so wedded to the social welfare state that simply not spending even more is enough to throw them into a tizzy. Those systems will keep right on going till they completely collapse - and the governments and traders will keep the status quo going till the final possible moment.

Sites like Zerohedge keep predicting doom, and it keeps not happening. I don't think people realize that logic doesn't apply. The selfish socialist mindset is all about the moment. The governments, banks, auditors, etc, will keep gaming the system to keep it afloat. When it crashes, it will REALLY crash - but that could still be awhile off.

No, you had it right with Pompeii. Didn’t work then, won’t work now.

“Austerity has become a dirty word. “

Ha!
What’s ‘dirty’ is that ‘productivity’ is now called ‘austerity’!

And ‘Debt’ is called ‘Growth’...

The masses rush to and fro.

"The Communist Party USA views the 2008 elections as a tremendous opportunity to defeat the policies of the right-wing Republicans and to move our country in a new progressive direction.

The record turnout in the Democratic Presidential primary races shows that millions of voters, including millions of new voters, are using this election to bring about real change. We wholeheartedly agree with them."

A Landslide Mandate For Change

A breakthrough election
Congratulations on an extraordinary history making election!

We can think back with pride to decades of hard work toward our strategic goal of a big enough, broad enough and united enough labor and all-people’s movement that could overcome the ultra-right blockage to all progress. That all people’s movement has come to life, it is dynamic and it has the potential to keep growing.

The election of Barack Obama and a strengthened Congress creates new conditions in our country. There is now the possibility to shift gears and move forward. This new day requires us to further develop our tactics in order to continue to deepen and broaden labor and people’s unity.

There are thousands of experiences that we all have had in these momentous days, some large, some small, all of which express the enormity of change in thinking and readiness for involvement that is underway and that steels us for the battles ahead.

The tears of joy we all shared as crowds gathered to watch the election results here and throughout the world dramatize the new moment we are in.

Change is Here, Change is Coming

Sam Webb, National Chair, Communist Party, USA:

Let me begin with a simple observation: If the last 30 years were an era of reaction, then the coming decade could turn into an era of reform, even radical reform. Six months into the Obama presidency, I would say without hesitation that the landscape, atmosphere, conversation, and agenda have strikingly changed compared to the previous eight years.

In this legislative session, we can envision winning a Medicare-like public option and then going further in the years ahead.

We can visualize passing tough regulatory reforms on the financial industry, which brought the economy to ruin.

We can imagine the troops coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan while U.S. representatives participate in a regional process that brings peace and stability to the entire region.

In the current political climate, the expansion of union rights becomes a real possibility.

Much the same can be said about winning a second stimulus bill, and we sure need one, given the still-rising rate, and likely long term persistence, of unemployment.

Isn’t it possible in the Obama era to create millions of green jobs in manufacturing and other sectors of the economy in tandem with an attack on global warming?

Can’t we envision taking new strides in the long journey for racial and gender equality in this new era, marked at its beginning by the election of the first African American to the presidency?

And isn’t the overhaul of the criminal justice and prison system – a system steeped in racism – no longer pie-in-the sky, but something that can be done in the foreseeable future?

All these things are within reach now!
