Last week THE FACTOR reported on a bias assault in Norfolk that left two newspaper reporters injured. Shortly after 11:00 p.m. on April 14th, 26 year-old Marjon Rostami and 31-year-old David Forster were coming home from the theater when someone threw a rock at their vehicle. Mr. Forster got out to affront the assailant and was set upon by approximately five African-American young men who beat him. The thugs then attacked Ms. Rostami as a crowd of about 30 surrounded the vehicle and witnessed the assault. Hysterical, Miss Rostami called 911 and the police arrived. The initial police report described the assault as a bias crime and a 16-year-old has been arrested. But now, the Norfolk police say it was not a bias crime and are refusing to release the 911 tape saying that would hurt their investigation. How? How could that be possible?

My first paper route was delivering the Virginian-Pilot. It was a good paper back then, leaned just a little right of center politically and staunchly supported the local military.

Frank Batten Sr. was a hands on owner. He gradually turned it over to his goofball son Frank Jr. in the late 1980's and 1990's and it's gone downhill ever since.

I don’t think I would have gotten out of the car if it could still be driven—I would have called the police (if I had a cell phone), given them the location, and gotten the heck out of there.

Of course, it’s my belief that everyone who qualifies should be armed any time they are out and about.

One point made by the witness you interviewed, I think is key: white folks are "easy marks" and give you "street cred". I think part of the reason is that these feral youth realize that they can beat up a white yuppie couple without significant fear of retribution.

It's not like there's any chance their victim was likely to come back later with a gang of friends to blow away everybody on that corner, something that they could not be sure of if they mugged the wrong black victim.
