Obama: 'I think same sex couples should be able to get married'

Updated 3:15 p.m. ET- President Barack Obama endorsed the right of same-sex couples to marry on Wednesday, a landmark pronouncement made in light of mounting pressure from gay rights advocates.

Obama became the first U.S. president to back the right of gay and lesbian couples to marry, a reversal from views expressed during the 2008 campaign, when he said he opposed same-sex marriage but favored civil unions as an alternative.

Obama told ABC News that, after reflection, he had "concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

In making his announcement, Obama completes what he had described as an “evolution” in his views on this issue, hastened by growing fervor this week involving gay rights. The growing pressure was capped Tuesday by North Carolina voters’ approval of a constitutional amendment banning not only same-sex marriages, but civil unions for gay and lesbian couples, as well.

Bill Clinton is laughing his butt off. It really galls him to be remembered as the POTUS who who created a new noun: Lewinsky. If Obama keeps this up, BC is going to be remembered as the POTUS who was a hundred times more savvy than his first Dem successor. Who would have imagined it would take the first (real) black POTUS to finally improve Clinton's legacy?

Re: Biden, it's looked for a long time as if his mind is going. I've seen it said that Biden is acting like a doofus to make it easier to replace him on the ticket. No way. He will voluntarily leave his heartbeat-away-from-the-Oval-Office slot dead before he'll leave voluntarily. He loves the spotlight, and ex-VEEPs don't get a whole lot of it. Plus it appears he's already been approached, and his reply said it all: “people...knew Obama was straight”.

If that wasn't a warning shot across Obama’s bow I don't know what would be. It's as if Slow Joe out and out said, ‘People knew—or *thought* they knew, Obama is straight. Kick me off the ticket, and I'll set the record straight.’

I.e.: Biden knows some low down/down low, and is not afraid to use it. I do, btw, realize that the quote in context might seem less threatening. I contend, however, that no Dem who's been in DC as long as Slow Joe uses the word ‘straight’ w’out reference to sexual preference.
