Lugar defeat underscores vanishing U.S. political middle

The landslide defeat of U.S. Senator Richard Lugar in Indiana sent an ominous message to Washington: unprecedented partisan gridlock in Congress likely will worsen next year and make difficult efforts to cut the record U.S. debt even tougher.

Tuesday's vote also delivered a punch to the gut of the Senate's "old guard," which for years has sought to restore the chamber's reputation as "the world's most deliberative body."

Widely hailed as an elder statesman, Lugar lost the Republican primary in his home state to a Tea Party-backed challenger, largely because he was seen as not conservative enough and too willing to compromise.

While politics has been long defined as the art of compromise, victor Richard Mourdock, who ridiculed Lugar's willingness to cut deals, made a prediction about next year.

"I don't think there's going to be a lot of successful compromise," Mourdock told CNN on Wednesday after beating Lugar, a 36-year veteran of the Senate, by double digits. Bipartisanship, Mourdock added, means Democrats voting for Republican initiatives.

Good thoughts there, muawiyah. But I would guess that broken glass isn’t enough for Jim.
How ‘bout Mittens entirely fund Free Republic from his campaign fund, become a Christian and let his hair go gray for starters.
Also he needs to publicly apologize to Newt and Santorum.

And I don’t like turkey subs with mustard, Gov. Next time we want mayo.

Buzz Cut ~ that post WWII "Winning Warrior" look that was so popular for so long ~ plus my idea of what broken glass consists of may be different than what you think it is but I like that one of him converting to Christianity.

Look, long time ago Jim and I were part of a discussion on FR about diabetes and how it probably affected then nominee Sotomayor. Not sure who brought up brittle bones but that was in there.

The newsies picked up on that ~ I don't think they ever understood the source ~ this is common with people on very long term insulin injections, so a lot of them were commenting about it like people who would bring up such a thing must be evil or something.

Next thing you know she was walking across the concourse at I think Reagan National and BROKE HER FOOT.

The newsies dropped their carping ~ but that proved to me THEY WATCH US ~ and WE HAVE INFLUENCE OF WHICH A GENERALLY UNAWARE ~ can you imagine us in charge of critical federal agencies.

Now I"m not talking about carrying the football with the nuclear missile command codes ~ something a bit easier to do ~ that involves sitting in chairs and telling other folks to make phone calls ~ and that's at the UNDERSECRETARY level. A cabinet position would probably kill me ~ at least turn me blind watching all those staff initiated presentations 24/7, and I can only imagine Jim rolling around the Pentagon or Department of Agriculture ~ but there are important agencies with much less drama and much more comfortable quarters. Some of them are located around the country ~ but those will be Assistant To The Undersecretary of XYZ or Director of XYZ. These are not Schedule C jobs.

They will watch us there as closely as they watch us at FR.

If Romney gives us ironclad guarantees maybe we could maneuver this great beast of talk such that it can tip a lever there or push one here, and give one of these two losers a win ~

I’m liking this guy already.

The GOP-E and rinos are overly eager to walk across the aisle with a smile, shake hands and add 10% to the tyranny proposed by the Democrats. That is why there is a TEA PARTY. We are thoroughly sick and tired of our rights being compromised away and an ever deeper hole when it comes to debt.

There is no way in hell that I will support an abortionist/socialist for president.

I just hope and pray that True Americans are finally beginning to wake up from their slumber and send a clear message to Washington. Where all this compromising has gotten us can be clearly seen. We are only one election away from a fully implemented dictatorship.

The Republicans just nonimated the most milquetoast moderate RINO for President that they could find. I guess the Republicans will just have to run a democrat next time.
