Mitt Romney’s prep school classmates recall pranks, but also troubling incidents
Washington Post ^ | 05-10-12 | Jason Horowitz

Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

I dislike Romney today and assume I would have disliked him in high school, but I don’t see any connection at all between this dumb story of a teenager acting foolishly and an election this year.

These bastards are going to force me to support Romney, and I don’t want to have to do that.

It’s almost as if they want Obama to lose.....if they want Obama to win, they should be damning Romney with faint praise, rather than trying to paint him as an actual conservative (which we all know he isn’t).

Why do we know so much about Romney in high school, and nothing about Obama in high school or college?

Where are the transcripts?

Where are the medical (and other) records?

Romney hasn’t threatened to kill them, nevertheless, these bullying stories by privileged prep school boys do make my skin crawl. Can’t stand fraternities for the same reason

I’m no Romney supporter, but this story is pure Barbara Streisand.

In 1965? BS.”

I agree. In fact, I was in an all boys boarding school in 1965. I’m sure some of my classmates were probably homosexual but they knew to keep a low profile.

Even the WaPo readers, most of whom are dedicated leftists, are commenting that this is just a fluff hit piece.

What happens in the Madrassa stays in the Madrassa?

Amazing that this story comes out just at the time
when Obama comes out for gay marriage eh.

Couldn’t have been planned, could it?

Time line:
Axelrod: Ok Joe, first you’ll come out for gay marriage
then the marriage amendment will pass in NC, we know that.
Then Obama will come out in support of gays and right
after that we hit them with the Romney is homophobe
story...

The WaPo is hemorrhaging money, some might say in its death throes. A reporter proves here that they know how to dig into ones past yet not a blessed one of them will dig into the One's past.

All it would take is balance: apply the same level of scrutiny to the left as they apply to the right. The return to profitability would be swift. But they won't do it. Why?

And that is at the newspaper level, what about at the reporter level? No one wants to be the next Woodward and Bernstein? None of them? As I said, this reporter proves that it is not magic. But Obama's surface is not even scratched. Quite curious.

High school???????????? Please. Forty or fifty years later of what possible relevance is anything that anyone has done in high school? I helped toss a cheerleader into a snowbank during Winter Carnival. I forged hall passes. I regularly skipped my toughest class. I enjoyed the company of females under the age of 18 in parked cars. I occasionally consumed adult beverages. In short, I was a teenaged boy. WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
