Just hours after President Barack Obama publicly backed gay marriage, the House struck back and passed a measure aimed at reinforcing the Defense of Marriage Act.
With a 245-171 vote, the House voted to stop the Justice Department from using taxpayer funds to actively oppose DOMA -- the Clinton-era law defining marriage as between a man and a woman that the Obama administration stopped enforcing in February 2011.
"It is not President Obama's prerogative to decide which laws matter and which do not, nor his right to challenge constitutional amendments duly passed by the various states," said the measure's sponsor, Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.). "The Justice Department is duty-bound to enforce DOMA and to not do so is a flagrant disregard for the Constitution and for the rule of law."
Huelskamp's amendment was attached to a $51.1 billion spending bill that would fund DOJ and the Commerce Department, and major science agencies. Sixteen Democrats voted with the GOP for the amendment, while seven Republicans opposed it.
Democrats immediately attacked Republicans for the vote. The issue of gay marriage has been brought to the fore by Obama to distract America from his horrible economic record. In this respect, the GOP is playing right into his hands. Obama has energized his base by re-stating his 1996 position in support of gay marriage, while solidifying his hold on an important Democratic party constituency whose influence far exceeds its numbers.
But hasn't he energzied gay marriage opponents too? Yes, but the issue is a wedge mostly in states he doesn't have a chance of winning anyway. In some important swing states - New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, and Florida - he may have bought himself more votes than he will lose. That might matter a lot if, as expected, those states, and...

On the CONTRARY, Obama is Messiah, he can do anything he wants.
Just ask almost anyone in our 50%+ gay mainstream media.

If the GOP hadn’t “taken the bait”, what would many be saying about them? “No spine”?, “no guts”?, “the stupid party”?, and other abuses.
What role should government have in Marriage? Why do I need permission from government? Why do they make me buy a marriage license?
Just wondering.
I’m not gay, not religious. It just seems to be another “chumming” of the waters by the politicians to whip each side into a frenzy. I’m sick of politicians. I’m sick of over reaching government. I’m sick of government that thinks it has a say in every corner and niche of our lives.
The fight is all over government goodies the attempt to redefine marriage. SS = government, Tax benefits = government.
it’s sad when i have to check to see if this is a john semmes sacasm piece
Well then, why should there be government at all by your statement? It reads like an advocacy for anarchy.
Marriage records are primarily administered by local governments to assure continuity of societal structures which ultimately give legitimacy to children’s patrilineal and matrilineal lines. How strongly maintained these are is a matter for the individuals involved which it seems to me is the real issue. Yet society, it also appears to me, would quickly break down without the authority endorsed by such organization as one can clearly see by simply looking at the majority of criminality regularly detailed in daily news accounts.
I’m sick too of the overreach of government, but that is really a separate issue.
So were all going to die of anarchy if government doesn’t record our births, marriages and death?
IMHO it definitely increases the odds.
I believe in what I wrote.
Best....
says it all
