New Jersey education officials will no longer use a standardized test question that asked third-graders to reveal a secret and write about why it was difficult to keep.
The question appeared on the writing portion of some versions of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge given to third-graders this past week. And it drew criticism from some parents, who thought it was inappropriate.

I’m sure the governor was aware of the question——/sarc
Good grief!
“Write about one time you suspected your parents might have been doing something illegal”
When you get uncomfortable answers like that, you start to think that you might be intruding on sensitve cultural issues, and you just stop asking questions ... right?
Not “the bad Christian and Jewish people, because Allah said they are friends of each other” or just a blanket “kafir” to cover all of the non-Muslims?
This apparently was being done from 3rd to 8th grade
However, the first six years I went to public school, we started every day with ...
* The Lord’s Prayer
* The 23rd Psalm
* The Pledge of Allegiance
* The first verse of “The Star Spangled Banner”.
In Junior High, the Lord’s Prayer and the 23rd Psalm had been dropped, and in High School, only the Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
In Public High School, we had to complete the following in order to graduate from the “College Course”.
US History - 2 years
Western Civ - 2 years
Survey of English Literature - 1 year
English Composition - 1 years
English - 2 years
Foreign Language (I took French and Italian) - minimum 2 years
One year each of the following ...
Algebra II
Geometry
Trigonometry
Solid Geometry and Differential Calculus
Geology
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
And an number of electives, Journalism, Accounting, Computer Math, Public Speaking, Music Theory, etc.
The homework was horrendous, and we were kept very, very busy, to say the least. By the time we were in our junior year, we were SO loaded down with work, some of us were forming study groups. In the evenings, we’d meet in the public library and in each other’s homes. Good practice for college, by the way.
On top of all that, most of us had jobs after school, either in a family business or in a local store or factory. Few of us were going to have the money out-of-pocket to even attend state schools, which were pretty inexpensive at that time, so we had to work after school. Others who had the resources were able to get involved in sports instead of having to work.
We still had time for mischief, especially in the summers after work, but we never tried to hurt anybody or destroy property.
School is nothing like that today.
That one's a real stretch, dude. No one's fought harder against that state's education establishment than Christie.
It's always fascinating, though, that liberal edumacators never see anything wrong with these types of questions until an uproar arises.
You sure you got your list right? I never heard of a college humanities major of any school requiring differential calculus.
I think you misunderstood. I didn’t say that Christie was the cause. Besides, when it comes to that man, double-mindedness on other issues won’t serve him well.
Public school is child abuse.
"Corzine is a scumbag thief."
You know why there are doing this don’t you?
This is their version of “Don’t ask don’t tell”
The state is the almighty, I think thats the real message. You can’t even keep a secret from the state.
Has anybody seen anything that might explain what they thought they were accomplishing with this question?
Dear “New Jersey education officials”; I have a secret for you......you’re idiots.....oh.....sorry......I guess everyone knew that.
It’ll be back.Something like:
OK children, If you had a little friend that was sad all the time,but he wouldn’t tell you why, what would you guess is the reason? OH, and don’t tell your mommy and daddy about this. It’s a secret.
