LBJ was apoplectic that the snot-nosed youngster bought the primary with his daddy’s money. LBJ felt that HE was the rightful candidate.
I agree with you - I think the commies were used as a scapegoat due to the recent troubles with the Soviets and Cuba.
Not only that, but JFK and Bobby were making things pretty hard for LBJ among powerful reps, senators and others in the Dem party of the South.
