I intend to report you to my seventeen-year-old daughter who is trying to arrange a prom for the ultraCatholic school she attends. Management is frantic that gowns may reveal an uncovered shoulder. She can't wait to graduate and will not visit Disneyland because it will remind her of the school administrators. The students/attendees will not be paired off and will buy their tickets and arrive individually, assuming that the school's bureaucracy on bureaucracy can get its act together to approve a sufficiently comprehensive set of aggressive rules (my daughter who has attended from the earliest grades through high school must present photo ID to be admitted).

I would bet that young Tiffany's parents, filled with HOPE (you should pardon the expression) at her christening, were more likely to be thinking of the famous jewelry store and their ummmm, HOPE that little Tiffany would wind up with a vast collection of its product line. Whether Hope will buy her the famous Hope Diamond as part of an engagement ring remains to be seen. It was good enough for Liz Taylor and should be.... Of course, I am assuming that the elder Hope would be the "husband" and the younger Tiffany "the wife" but who knows for sure? After all, I must be an ageist among other things. (Oh golly, "ageist" does not show up as a misspelling and must already have been recognized as a word).

As Marcus Tullius Cicero used to say: O Tempora, O Mores!!!! Few of us are still alive to whom he personally said that!

That reminds me of Ronald Reagan’s remark, “I knew Thomas Jefferson; he was a good friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Thomas Jefferson!” May we all live to be as old as you and Mr. Reagan!

One of the jewelry-store Tiffanys was a hero of the Spanish-American War, but I’d be more likely to name a daughter Theodore Roosevelt than Tiffany. “Gunner Anoreth,” as she is now, narrowly missed being Lee Atwater (German last name) on her birth certificate, instead of Josephine Victoria Clare. Mr. Atwater died the day after she was born, and the vital-stats paperwork was all done.

Best wishes to your daughter on her prom dreams. I went shooting and then out to dinner with my Dad on prom night, “Frankie’s” under the Bridge-Tunnel on-ramp, best fried oysters ever. We always went there when Mom was out of town.
