A Democratic congressman is trying to give the federal government the power to regulate pizza in public school lunches, following a failed attempt last year.
The legislation proposed by Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., would end pizza being counted as a vegetable in school lunches and allow the government to set nutritional standards.
Polis said Congress and fast-food lobbyists were able to nix a similar Agriculture Department plan last year. Frozen-pizza manufacturers are still able to have their product counted as a vegetable based on its tomato paste content.
The congressman said hes got nothing against pizza in school lunches, but it shouldnt be considered a vegetable because it includes sugar, salt and other ingredients that carry a high amount of fats and carbohydrates while childhood obesity and Type II diabetes remain a major concern.
Pizza has a place in school meals, Polis said in a statement.

That’s right — “behavior” that the good Congressman doesn’t like (eating pizza) because he thinks it’s unhealthy is therefore bad, but the truly unhealthy behavior (being a fudge packer) which he engages in is certainly OK and the government damn well better not interfere with that.
Whoever said that Polis’s opponent should use this against him should understand that he is in an utterly safe Rat bastard district and the Marxists in Boulder just adore this flamer.
Nazis.
Tomato is not a vegetable, it's a fruit.
Abortion on toast
No pizza at lunch, but if you want to have an abortion during lunch, why that’s just fine.
So, now he's got time for this issue.
BRAVO, CongressThing!
We feel the children will be very excited about these meals!.
Raised children and almost two generations of grandchildren - since they are 15 years apart in age - and the only food I have ever seen any of them get excited about was something that contained chocolate and was homemade. Was talking with the youngest about their lunch choices yesterday and he mentioned something called Eastern steak - apparently a patty made out of mushrooms - which he describes as positively gross. Said most of their lunch ends up in the trash and he is always starved when he gets home. First choice for dinner is always pizza or pasta. Wonder if this Congressman has children.
I’m not sure which tasted worse, when I was in skrewel, the pizza or sloppy joe’s.
Polis is from the People’s Republic of Boulder, where they love stuff like this. Besides, he bought his seat and has more than enough money to fend off any challengers.
Yet, you want it REGULATED!!
Jeez, Foolis (AZP-Co) regulate it at your house and leave other kids out of it... (us parents can regulate what is good for our kids, OK??)
Colordans sent this guy to D.C. for this?
Sad but oh, so true.
Rep Polis: gay activist and wealthy entrepreneur. Knows nothing about kids school lunches, though.
Every stinking GD day these bastards are regulating this and controlling that and mandating something and banning another!
Please for the love of God just leave us the hell alone.
Botanical fruit, culinary vegetable. The state of Arkansas has even named it the state fruit, and the state vegetable just to cover both bases.
Sounds yummy, but we’re talking school pizza here. Bleached white flour, chemicals to separate the sauce from the crust (frozen pizza should be called chemical pizza), processed cheese (that’s real cheese with emulsifiers), and toppings made from real meat byproducts.
The congressman is correct. You might call this horror a million and one things, but it is most certainly not a vegetable.
You’re way out of date. The tomato is both fruit and vegetable, and it’s been established thusly throughout both of our lifetimes. It’s a culinary vegetable and botanical fruit. Our own supreme court even ruled on it in 1893. (Nix v. Hedden (149 U.S. 304))
“The tomato is both fruit and vegetable, and its been established thusly throughout both of our lifetimes. Its a culinary vegetable and botanical fruit.”
I don’t recognize such a thing, and don’t believe any authority on earth may compel me to do so, much less SCOTUS. What it is botanically is what it is. I don’t care what Nix v. Hedden said. I don’t care that in the 1890s for the purposes of trade no one distinguished between tomatoes and vegetables. Nor that tomatoes are cooked as if they were vegetables. Nor that the popular perception of tomatoes is that they are vegetables.
They are fruit; case closed!
