Abortion Ban is Strenghtened in Norway

Norwegian Directorate of Health concluded that the practices associated with abortion after 22 week has been in violation of the law.

The directorate provided a legal assessment of the ban on abortion when the fetus can survive.

Abortion Act states that after the end of the eighteenth week of pregnancy, a pregnancy is not canceled unless there are particularly weighty reasons for it. Is there reason to believe that the fetus is viable, you consent to pregnancy termination is not given.

In the Directorate's assessment, it is not allowed for abortions of viable fetuses even if strong social reasons would indicate otherwise. The Ministry agrees with this assessment. Accordıngly, the woman's young age, or other strong social reasons can not justify the abortion of viable fetuses.

- This is a serious matter and it is important that the Health Directorate has made a clear conclusion, said Health and Human Services Mınıster Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen.

This is the major news story in Norway right now. A hospital have been doing abortions on fetuses as old as 22 weeks.The worst aspect of the news story was that the aborted fetuses still alive were left there to die. I am so glad this is being investigated and hopefully this will not happend again. We have quite strict rules against this is Norway. The first 3 months the woman can freely choose. After that she have to apply and only strong reasons are grounds for allowing an abortion. After 20 weeks the only reason is if the mothers life is in danger or the fetus is not viable. So this is quite shocking that the hospital have been breaking the law.

Perhaps not exactly on target with this story, but want to say: An ex-SIL of mine had a baby girl born at just 27 weeks. She was tiny and there were obviously great concerns... but God is in charge and his will was that she would survive.

After more than a dozen years later, I ran into the family while shopping. The girl is now 17 years old and perfectly normal. She’s been a blessing to her family and those who love her. It makes me wonder what path she will follow in life and how she will influence or change the lives of those around her. It reminds me that life is precious, and how much I wish the selfish ‘choice’ folks could better understand it.
