EXCLUSIVE: Romney 'Repudiates' Conservative Group's Planned Rev. Wright Attacks By Guy Benson 5/17/2012

In an exclusive interview with Townhall, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney rebuked a conservative group that is reportedly planning to assail President Obama over his 20-year relationship with controversial Chicago pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright:

"I repudiate the effort by that PAC to promote an ad strategy of the nature they've described. I would like to see this campaign focus on the economy, on getting people back to work, on seeing rising incomes and growing prosperity -- particularly for those in the middle class of America. And I think what we've seen so far from the Obama campaign is a campaign of character assassination. I hope that isn't the course of this campaign. So in regards to that PAC, I repudiate what they're thinking about ... It's interesting that we're talking about some Republican PAC that wants to go after the president [on Wright]; I hope people also are looking at what he's doing, and saying 'why is he running an attack campaign? Why isn't he talking about his record?'"

Right now Obama is imploding on his own. Keep your powder dry.

Romney is 101% correct in distancing himself from this BAD IDEA of attacking the Rev'rund Wright.

The Rev'rund is not worth spending time and creativity on in a campaign commercial....and the humongous expense of running it on TV is asinine, fruitless and probably counter-productive.

Wright is soooo yesterday, and his big yap is soooo uncool. Why build this radical creep up over and over again???

He belongs on the ash heap of fringe nutcases....and congratulations to the Romney campaign strategeriests (GWB's word, not mine, LOL)) for disavowing the ad. Both the commercial and the commie clergyman should be relegated to the landfill adjacent to some alligator swamp.

They had better find a way! This is the first time in 77 years I won’t be voting, and his listening to that Oh Johnny(who loves everyone) McPainful really clinched it for me. I have turned off TV until January.

Of course he repudiates them, that's what Superpacs are for--to do the candidate's dirtywork for him while he keeps above it. Romney knows full well the hate machine will be zeroing in on his Mormonism, so he's taking the moral high ground in advance.

Agreed. Admittedly, Mitt’s in an uncomfortable board position on this issue. On the one hand, Wright should have been a major focus during the 2008 election. His “theology” is reprehensible and Obama’s association with Marxism and Black Liberation should have been fully explored then.

On the other hand, Mitt’s Mormonism WILL be a major focus during this election cycle, and every skeleton in the LDS closet, every questionable tenet of the religion, everything and anything that the MSM can use to stir up controversy will be splashed everywhere as luridly and as contemptibly as they can possibly get it to stick.

That being the case, he seems to feel he can’t come out in the open and start taking potshots at Wright because that would just give the MSM an opening to start stirring up anti-Mormon sentiment.

However the PAC can do it, even if Mitt tells them he doesn’t want them to. After all, they are not under his “control.”

This is the same sneaky trick he used against Perry during the primaries. He gets his cake, eats it too, and there’s not a damn thing the MSM or Obama can do about it.

How effective it’s going to be as a tactic, is another question.

No doubt he’s going to be doing some very careful polling on this issue. He’s prepared to take some hits on his Mormonism because he knows he’s going to get those regardless of what he does, so it may be worth it if it inflicts some substantial damage on Obama.

Overall, I’d have to say I don’t like it, and I don’t think Conservatives are going to like being reminded of how dirty Mitt fights this early in the game. Their support for his candidacy is still reluctant and tentative.

He should be going after the Wright/Obama connection in a forthright, unequivocal and no-holds-barred manner. Wright’s anti-Americanism makes him a legitimate target.

Mormons, on the other hand, are generally well respected as honest, patriotic, hardworking, family-oriented men and women with good business sense — who happen to have some weird beliefs. So what? Every religion seems weird to members of other religions.

It would be better to fight this battle openly and honestly.

Romney is positioning to take a “dive” in this election...

I do not agree with that. Romney desperately wants to win this election. His father was a failed presidential candidate and Mitt himself has had a less than stellar political career himself. This is his last chance to redeem himself (and his father) and I think he will eventually take off the gloves and pull out all the stops if necessary.

So why is Mitt so quiet lately? Well there is an old saying that goes along the lines of "Never interfere with the enemy when he is destroying himself."

Right now, Obama is on an epic losing streak and he continues to dig himself deeper into a hole he may never climb out of.

“if it didn’t resonate with voters in 2008 and the media tried to smother the story (but couldn’t), it has little chance of impacting anyone’s vote now, 4 years later.”

I’m not saying it’ll work, but one of the major reasons it didn’t resonate is that McCain deliberately ran the other way from it. Surely the MSM couldn’t keep the names Ayers and Wright out of everyone’s mouths, especially on talk radio and the internet which they cannot yet monopolize.

But it’s not as if just because you heard of them by the second on FR that they were household names. I’m sure Joe American Idol and Jane Dancing with the Stars can’t tell them apart from John Boehner or Joe Biden. And who can blame them, instead of me for fiddling while Washington burns? Politics is really, really, really boring.

Some polls show Mittsie leading, but he’s trying his best to lose the election and is too stupid(not enough of a conservative) to know it.

All RINO candidates use the same play book.

I might have though he was taking a dive a week ago....but after Obama’s stupid catering to 1% of the population, he’s now given the momentum to Romney, big time.

And if anything, now Obama is imploding.....so right now the best thing to do is stay out of the way.

I didn’t think it is possible, but Romney is a bigger pansy than McCain.

“This is the first time in 77 years I won’t be voting”

Wait a minute, what are you, 95 or over? In that case you can feel free to let whoever take the office, as you probably wouldn’t be around for the whole term.

I totally agree. This is just another distraction and probably planned by Obama to get the black vote fired up.

Romney is smart to stay out of this fight and concentrate on important issues.

That’s where he’ll win.

Unbelievable! out of all the candidates running for president on the gop ticket ...the voters select the ONE idiot that introduced socialized medicine to the USA. How many states were involved in lawsuits due to Obamacare?
and btw since when did character assassination bother Mitt Romney? he sure as hell nuked the other candidates during the primaries but Obama is off limits?
