In a statement, Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades repudiates the plan being hatched by GOP operatives for an ad campaign tying Obama to Reverend Wright:

And that’s good. The problem, though, is that it turns out that Romney himself attacked Obama over Wright on Sean Hannity’s show on February 7th of this year, during the GOP primary.

The point here, as evidenced by Romney’s repudiation today of the GOP plan to revive Wright, is that leading Republicans know it’s not acceptable to play the race card as overtly as this. As Adam Serwer notes today, it’s basically as crass an exercise in race-baiting as portraying Obama as the “type of black man they cross the street to avoid,” and Republican leaders know this is a nonstarter, morally and politically.
At the same time, large swaths of the GOP base, and even of the conservative commentariat, are heavily invested in a deeply paranoid view of Obama that goes far beyond whether Obama sat in the pews and nodded along with Wright’s anti-American venom.
GOP leaders are very careful to declare Wright off limits, but leading Republican officials and opinionmakers have fed this broader and deeper strain of anti-Obama paranoia for literally years now, in all sorts of ways. By hinting that Obama doesn’t really wish the country well. Or by suggesting that he’s overly sympatheic towards America’s enemies. Or by failing to forcefully condemn birtherism.

The quote above from Romney to Hannity captures this well. The problem isn’t just the invocation of Wright; it’s the broader message on display — that Obama harbors a secret desire to secularize the country. The invocation of Wright is just a symptom of the larger problem here.

Wright isn’t a ghost. He is a septic pustule that deserves to be exterminated, burnt, irradiated, and launched into the sun.
That’s a laugher! Wright should be arrested, charged with treason, and if found guilty (ahem) should be hanged until dead.

It doesn't matter what they or Romney says. Voters will respond to information regarding Obama's noxious personal beliefs & associations.

You could look at it the other way, namely in that race is protecting Obama. If Wright didn’t run a black church and Obama weren’t black, then this would be a perfectly legitimate attack point. Imagine if Romney had attended a fundamentalist white christian church with a pastor who believed in whatever is white people’s version of liberation theology and constantly said things like “ God damn America!” Ya think the MSM would run with it?
By the way, they kinda sorta already did, with Bush the Younger and Bob Jones University, remember? And that was just somewhere he was going to speak, or something. Not his church of choice for years, which was active in his political circles with all his buddies.
This race card charge is bogus. I’d bet if it was something as clear cut as Obama having been a member of something called the Black Communist Party of the U.S.A. they couldn’t call him a communist because that’d be using the race card.
The GOPe wants to play nice. Thats why they are such losers.
GBTV played a tape this past hour of Wright describing the bribe he was offered by Baby-Doc’s team to STFU.

Yep. I personally don't have a problem with Romney "staying above the fray" on certain things (like Obama always does while his allies throw all the dirt)- but that shouldn't mean that everybody else can't raise these issues, and give Obama the vetting he never had in '08.
Let me be one of the first to re-attack Obama over Wright.
However, it’s probably not worth it for Romney to take this bait. Stick with the economy and the embarrassing failure that is Barack Obama.
Whilke I wouldn’t focus on it, I can’t imagine a single good reason why Wright should be “off limits” to anyone.
Who the F is Barack Obama to have any issue in his life off limits???
When we are reading front page stories on Romney’s high school days, we read about Christie’s weight, Mormonism, Ann Romney’s work history, the list is endless.

Sean Hannity played mitt romney today disavowing any attacks on obama using wright... he attacked the interview where wright destroys the obama myth and he refuses to campaign on anything but his flowery promises of a better tomorrow. mitt is a spineless mangina.
