Freshman Republicans Switch from Tea to Kool Aid
CATO Institute ^ | May 18, 2012 | Ted DeHaven

This week the Club for Growth released a study of votes cast in 2011 by the 87 Republicans elected to the House in November 2010. The Club found that “In many cases, the rhetoric of the so-called “Tea Party” freshmen simply didn’t match their records.” Particularly disconcerting is the fact that so many GOP newcomers cast votes against spending cuts.

The study comes on the heels of three telling votes taken last week in the House that should have been slam-dunks for members who possess the slightest regard for limited government and free markets. Alas, only 26 of the 87 members of the “Tea Party class” voted to defund both the Economic Development Administration and the president’s new Advanced Manufacturing Technology Consortia program (see my previous discussion of these votes here) and against reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank (see my colleague Sallie James’s excoriation of that vote here).

The following table shows how each of the 87 freshman voted.

The votes I judge by are ones that mean something, not symbolic votes on bills that are sure to be rejected by the Senate AND not supported by the House.

Cato’s BS, like the television media’s, is bought by too many but there’s little I can do but point out facts and intelligent ways of looking at those facts.

In my opinion voting to pass the Pigford Amendment meant something.

At a time when we have no budget and are wildly in dept, raising the debt ceiling matters.

You won't mind if I don't select you as the arbiter of what is an intelligent way of looking at things, I'm sure.

i think (one of my many) problems is that i keep investing too much hope in politicians - which makes me all pissy an sheet - i have got to start looking at their positives while holding their feet to the fire

west disappointed me big time with that boner debt ceiling vote - but i can imagine the pressure is huge - still - bachmann did not cave in to it

i was hoping the freshmen would have held their own caucuses and had a revolt against electing boner - they didn't - but it is CRUCIAL they do it in the next congress

and i’m with you - i still support west

Yep, that’s the one. And he had a sheepish grin when being interviewed by the press.

Cato is a Libertarian organization. Libertarians never allow for congressional reality. Unfortunately, no one with a brain votes Libertarian so all they can do is bitch and moan. If they ever had to govern, their heads would explode.

Let's see:

Did the writer of this piece interview any of the freshmen?

Did he request any statements from the freshmen's offices to explain their votes?

Did he do any research to determine if there were circumstances involved in the votes?

You know, sometimes there are reasons why people do things that disappoint us besides "they drank the kool-aid". I have NO doubt that the tea party people who were elected in '10 are completely dedicated to propositions they ran on and care as much as ever about stopping Obama and his Marxist administration, but everything doesn't happen overnight or with just one vote.

“i was hoping the freshmen would have held their own caucuses and had a revolt against electing boner - they didn’t - but it is CRUCIAL they do it in the next congress”

What’s CRUCIAL is that we have the votes this time to matter.
The Speaker reflects the majority that elect him and the RINO-moderate wing out-numbered us this session.
40 more conservatives would give us the Leadership, 20 and up would give us significant influence.

Yet right now the Establishment candidates are rolling effortlessly through their primaries while conservatives moan about what they didn’t get instead of being excited over how close we are to winning the House.

i was with you when i first read the post

but then i researched for myself

tell me - what is the justification for voting for the 2 amendments that fund bureaucrapz instead of using it to reduce the deficit?

You speak as if you are talking to an adolescent. I assure you I am not.

I have interviewed Col West many times and was an early supporter of his, before it was kool. He has said to others, “I wouldn’t be here without her” re the House.

“I missed the part in the bill that had the Pigford Amendment, my mistake”.

“Our soldiers won’t get paid with out the continuing resolution”

I have his cell as I do many of the people on that list. Do you?

Yes, I do. I met him thru Breitbart. He will be part of the GOP push to stop sequestration and I know they'll win.

Talk about an obnoxious, arrogant git talking to adolescents? Look in the mirror much?

How the f do I know?? Exactly my point. It would be nice if SOMEONE ASKED THEM why they voted the way they did!! Although, screaming, "RINO!!!" is always so much more fun and easy.

All you can do is vote for someone you believe is an honest person and trust they'll do the right thing. If they can't do the right thing, you trust there's a good reason. Otherwise, you'd just have to give up and remove yourself from the grief of politics.

I was glad they raised such a stink over the last ceiling fight. Hopefully, they'll have the public's support this next time. I'm confident they'll stop sequestration however the ceiling fight goes.

you claim to have his number - call and ask

you decry an article that presents fact - the article never claimed to be all inclusive of every nuance

and instead of YOU - you that are claiming they should provide that - and yet YOU WON’T EITHER

YOU look in the mirror much?

Oh, so you are THAT Debbie!

So we don’t agree and you are name calling? How intelligent and composed of you.

AND btw, the freshmen agreed to the sequestration.

So I guess its ok that they were for it, before they’ll be heroes and be voting to stop it.
