I'd never heard of such a thing until my father in law passed, and my M-I-L made a big deal about getting someone to stay at her house.

I just grew up in a different time, I guess.

It must be the area that I live in but we have always done that. We usually got a neighbor (even a teen) to house sit for the wake and funeral. Unfortunately, the obituaries list full names (and remaining spouses), the city in which he or she lived and the funeral times. It is very easy to find the address. Sad times we live in...
