Not as up on Brahms as I should be - don't think we've ever sung the Requiem - although I think my daughter did at Davidson College.

Brahms could write instant folk music. When you hear the chorale setting of "How lovely are your dwelling places" from the Requiem, the initial reaction is, "Brahms wrote that?"
At the first performance in Dresden, the audience was in tears during that fourth movement. Clara Schumann, who had just lost Robert, was crying like a baby.
