Utah School Fined $15,862 for Accidentally Selling Soda at Lunch

In order to remain eligible for federal subsidies for school lunches, officials at Davis High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, knew they weren't allowed to have active vending machines selling soda and candy in the school lunchroom during the 47-minute lunch period.

But rules designed to keep kids from washing down their lunches with something fizzy can be tricky. That lesson was driven home when the state Office of Education's Child Nutrition Program hit the school with a $15,862 fine—75 cents per violation over the period of many months that it turns out students had been illicitly selling soda in the school store.

Fearing more fines, the school has pulled the plug on all of its vending until it can figure out what the rules require. Because students eat lunch in the hallways, vending may actually be banned throughout the school.

A local ABC affiliate reports that the school is considering extreme measures:

There are also plans at Davis High to put soda and candy vending machines in a converted janitor’s closet, with a door, to comply with federal guidelines.

Meanwhile, the kids lose twice because of the mistakes of their elders, says Davis High School Principal Dee Burton:

Compounding the situation in the long term, the school vending machines generate revenue to help fund nonrevenue-related school activities such as debate, new computers for the classroom, or royalties for the songs used in the school musical, Burton said.

"The money we'll lose by not being able to sell the items amounts to thousands and thousands of dollars," he said.

The school will also have to the cover the cost of the fine out of general funds.

Kids can’t be allowed to have a soda, but they are mature enough for sex. These liberals are insane.

So, a Federal Gummint agency takes away from the school $15+K, which money surely came from another Federal Gummint agency in the first place..

We are sooooo doomed... :(

“”Kids can’t be allowed to have a soda, but they are mature enough for sex. These liberals are insane.”””

To expand on your statement, liberals think it is perfectly fine for kids to have an abortion without parental consent as long as they don’t drink a soda.

The more I read about the state of our society, the more I think we are devolving into a primordial state. If the society is not raised on Judeo-Christian principles, and Capitalism, the more likely we will end up killing each other.

The commie bastards didn’t “fine” the school, they fined the taxpayers who provide money to the school to educate our children.

I wonder what Hillary thinks about this case of “government interfering with individual lives”?

In order to remain eligible for federal subsidies for school lunches,

Best solution to the problem.

Tell the FEDS to go to H#LL. Give back the school lunch money. Tell the kids that they can carry their lunch or go hungry. Fire all of the lunch room staff (which probably includes a highly paid nutritionist).

In the end I bet that the kids will be healthier and the school will be better off fiscally.

Simple solution - include a free condom with each can of soda.

if the school is smart they would tell the feds to kiss their patootie.

They would have an large level of support.

Pro choice means pro freedom to decide what we will eat.

Did you ever think that this would ever be an argument you would fight?

Da**ed Fascists!

Just think, the school may be forced to end their condom exchange and birth control distribution programs.

If they actually did give back the Fed school lunch money they would with in a week have Federal Marshals in the superintendants office saying they can’t give back the money. They would have every race hustler in the country giving speeches on how the school administration is racist because the school lunch is the only nutritious meal the poor minority kids get all day (despite their families being on food stamp programs).

They won’t do it because they know this and don’t want to face the heat.

They could probably have the lunches catered cheaper than the Fed school lunch program. The food would be better tasting and better quality.

” Just think, the school may be forced to end their condom exchange and birth control distribution programs. “

Naaahhh - they’ll just eliminate what’s left of the Classical Literature section of the school library...

(Nobody ever reads that boring old junk anyway, and it’ll make more room for the porn-surfing computers and video games...)

I am sure that if I and my friends were in school today and they had this policy we would all bring soda to school and drink it during lunch.

Actually, a few of us would probably be set up in the parking lot selling it out of our cars for a profit.

Whatever happened to Question Authority? Somebody needs to start printing those bumper stickers again. These kids are whimps and need an education in civil disobedience.

What makes you think it is just the liberals? The Republicans are going right along with it. Have you seen any of them doing anything but sitting on their hands about this insanity.

The Republicans are actually more dangerous than the liberals. They tell you it is crazy when you talk to your GOP rep but when they are in meetings where this stuff is decided they just sit and let it happen. The GOP is full of big government shivering spinless yellow belly do-nothing cowards.
