Exclusive: Did White House "spin" tip a covert op?

White House efforts to soft-pedal the danger from a new "underwear bomb" plot emanating from Yemen may have inadvertently broken the news they needed most to contain.

At about 5:45 p.m. EDT on Monday, May 7, just before the evening newscasts, John Brennan, President Barack Obama's top White House adviser on counter-terrorism, held a small, private teleconference to brief former counter-terrorism advisers who have become frequent commentators on TV news shows.

KEYWORDS: brennan; covert; obama; underwear
The key paragraph is buried near the end: "The original AP story, however, made no mention of an undercover informant or allied "control" over the operation, indicating only that the fate of the would-be suicide bomber was unknown."

Earlier the story states: "According to five people familiar with the call, Brennan stressed that the plot was never a threat to the U.S. public or air safety because Washington had 'inside control' over it."

Thus, there does not appear to be any question that Brennan revealed the key point of "inside control" for the first time and the AP did not reveal that point.

Do you trust John Brennan and Obama with your national security?

The White House places the blame squarely on AP, calling the claim that Brennan contributed to a leak "ridiculous."

It's always someone else's fault, isn't it? Why did Brennan give out the information at all? If HE didn't pass along the information that led AP to break the story, then who did? AP didn't come up with the story all on their own, I'm sure.

null and void to Sergeant Tim

Before he is done I fully expect him to release the names, addresses and phone numbers of anyone anywhere in the world who has ever provided any information to agency workers.

The damage to US intel will last multiple generations.

“Al Quds” Brennan is a loose-tonged braggart; remember his chest-beating over some plot by Somalis back around inauguration time? http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5idxpgwgvjxQF0FmqXECFeK-xhcSQ

“Do you trust John Brennan and Obama with your national security?”

Hell no. Their handling of the revelations post killing Bin Laden would have got any lesser official’s security clearances revoked.

This is the first crystal clear account yet of the events, the chronology, the nearly eager betrayal of Britain who this time had the skin in the game.

I am sorry for Britain, who was said to be already “strained” to work with the leaky USA.

We are damaged because of the egos employed by this administration and the narcissism that blankets team Obama, even in vital special operations

Where is the media coverage of this besides this Reuters article, which buries the lead?
