In 2009, President Obama delivered the commencement address at the University of Notre Dame. Now, Notre Dame is suing his administration over its insistence that Catholic schools and other institutions provide insurance coverage for sterilizations, contraceptives, and other abortifacient drugs without any meaningful opt-out for conscientious objectors.
Rev. John Jenkins, the university's president, was given much grief over his commencement invitation to President Obama in 2009. Today, he sent the following email to Notre Dame employees, announcing and explaining the lawsuit.

Didn’t Notre Dame give him an honorary doctorate?
Since when is Notre Dame a Catholic College.
A very wealthy friend of mine cut off all big donations to ND because they invited the illegal alien pro-death muslim to the college in 2009. They ain’t seen a dime since from him.
For them to show any kind of outrage at this POS’s administration is the height of hypocrisy.
Hahahahahahaha! Karma came back and bit them.
Wow...
Let’s talk about hypocrisy, shall we.
Did they think the Scorpion wouldn’t sting them when they carried it across the river in 2008?
Georgetown can get away with poking Catholicism in the eye. Notre Dame can’t. They still have some real Catholic students there, a few good priests, and a lot of alumni who don’t appreciate things like giving a radical abortionist like Obama an honorary Doctor of Law degree—when he hasn’t even done anything to earn it. Not a single scholarly law article, even though he headed the Harvard Law Review and worked as a law professor (read untenured visiting adjunct with annual contracts) in Chicago.
Fr. Jenkins is hoping to get some creds with his angry alumni. I still say, find a new President, someone who is a real Catholic.
Whether NDU is Catholic to your satisfaction or to anyone else’s, the fact is that to the vast majority of Americans NDU IS America’s foremost Catholic university. Fordham, Georgetown, Boston College, and St. Louis do not,in their names or nationwide reputations create in the mind the Catholic image of NDU. The Golden Dome, Touchdown Jesus, and Pat O’Brien as Rockne, talking to his team about The Scool of Our Lady. All these identify NDU. Thus, it was incumbent upon its president to take this step. No matter who they invited in ‘09 to speak,Notre Dame cannot stand aside while the American Church is attacked for its beliefs. Maybe the good father wishes there was another way, but for NDU there isn’t. Its position in this country makes this move an obligation.
He has given pro-life Catholics a prominent voice in the campus. He has reformed Notre Dame in terms of banning the Vagina Dialogues from that campus.
Father Jenkins still has a ways to go, but there are good Catholics at Notre Dame.
For the Obama Commencement, the University allowed a second Commencement ceremony to be held at the same time.
So Father Jenkins was forced to give in to the protestors.
There is the famous Notre Dame 88, which has lost two of its members (one to cancer). The other, Father Norman Weslin recently passed away.
These were 88 prolifers that were arrested for being on the Notre Dame campus.
Father Jenkins and Notre Dame eventually saw all the charges dropped against these people.
The short of this is that Notre Dame has been hurt by the Obama invitation.
Hopefully the changes after the Obama invitation (increase power to prolifers on campus) will continue...
Though you may be right that Notre Dame has a ways to go to be a solidly Catholic University.
Ping
>Georgetown can get away with poking Catholicism in the eye. Notre Dame cant.<
.
It has to do with the school’s name — Notre Dame, the golden dome and statue of Our Lady.
Remove those symbols, call the school ‘South Bend University’ and nobody would know it was a Catholic institution of higher learning at one time.
Ping. I don’t know if you want to try to defend Notre Dame...
The president of ND should have been publicly and loudly chastised by what's left of the American Catholic church. An excommunication wouldn't have been too much for this heretic.
I don't care what noble background ND has had. To me, to invite this POS that lives in our White House was disgusting, and now to complain about something that this POS that lives in our White House has "declared" is 100% disgustingly hypocritical. May ND go to hell along with its complacent faculty.
Notre Dame: the same college that invited Obama to speak right after he became President?
Notre Dame: the Catholic school on one side of the country while the CATHOLIC Georgetown is inviting the HHS secretary to speak on the other side of the country?
I can’t even laugh at this anymore. :(:(:(:(:(
Yesterday, in Austin , I attended 0730 Mass and there were several cars with Obama 2012 bumper stickers.
These folks will close their eyes to Catholic teachings on abortion, traditional marriage and government mandates on the Church, just so they can continue collecting their government goodies.
In the same breath ND should renounce The One’s honorary degree. I also wonder if the 90+ faculty members that attacked Biship Jenky’s homily are on-board with this lawsuit.
Pssst...you can keep the doctorate (*wink, wink*).
If you took a snapshot of him 3 years ago, the pic could have accurately been captioned Judas Jenkins. But you know what? He isn't a snapshot. Like every person who ain't dead yet, he's a live-streaming video.
He's clearly being pushed, either by his pro-life alumni, or the "Catholic wing" of his faculty, or his CSC superiors, or his awakening conscience, or the Holy Spirit. Or all of the above. He's long been prayed for by Fr. Norm Weslin, who is, I have no doubt, still praying for him now, as Fr. Norm is sturdily positioned before the throne of the True and Rightful King.
Anyway, Jenkins is still in motion --- and when he does the right thing, he should be cheered by every man of good will.
Yes, the Judas betrayed us. But Simon Bar-Jonah denied the Lord 3 times --- totally wimped out in the face of a gabby servant girl!! --- and Saul tried to kill every Christian he could get his hands on. That was before Simon learned to live up to his name ("Rock") and Saul became Paul.
A man can change. Let's stop snarking and pray hard.
” Fr. Jenkins is hoping to get some creds with his angry alumni. I still say, find a new President, someone who is a real Catholic.”
He would fit in well in Harvard Square....maybe he could run the Harvard Coop ?
: )
That post was.....awesome. Thank you!
Did Obama get an honorary law degree from ND?
“Father Jenkins and Notre Dame eventually saw all the charges dropped against these people.”
You view things a little too optimistically. Fr. Jenkins had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do the right thing, here, and only after investigations showed evidence that Notre Dame had treated pro-ABORT protestors at Notre Dame far more favorably, giving rise to potential multi-million-dollar lawsuits against this hellhole.
The fact is that Notre Dame is an anti-Catholic institution with a vibrant Catholic minority community.
My son was accepted at Notre Dame for the coming year, but our visit there this past fall persuaded him that it isn't really much of a place for any self-respecting Catholic.

Folks should certainly pray for the likes of Fr. Jenkins. However, it's putting on blinders to think that he's doing the right things for the right reasons.
Regarding the treatment of the Notre Dame 88, he only relented when it looked like perhaps they'd be able to sue the university and the civil authorities for treating them worse than pro-abort protestors similarly-situated.
As for this latest kerfuffle, I'd chalk it up entirely to outside pressures. This is a fellow who thought bringing on a pro-abort political donor to the Board of Trustees was a fabulous idea. If you can make one of the governors of the university someone who is so pro-abort that she gives many thousands of dollars to the cause of abortion, it seems tedious to complain about being forced to lay out a couple of bucks for contraceptive pills.
He's just doing what he perceives he needs to do to keep his day job. After all, if he loses it, the next assignment his order gives him might not be as posh.

Article (on Freerepublic):
Catholic University Turns Down Obama Appearance Over Timing Issues
The first line of the LifeSiteNews.com article on this says it all:
St. Edward's University, a Catholic institution of higher education that shares its founder [the Holy Cross fathers] with the University of Notre Dame, has rejected a request by President Obama to give a speech at the school.
So Obama's appearance in 2009 at Notre Dame has sparked other Catholic Catholics to be very gun shy of having Obama on campus...
Time for ND to EAT IT !! (You've crapped in your hat-now it's time to wear it!)

Notre Dame prez to Obama on contraception mandate: what happened to the sensible approach?
Though I agree with you that Notre Dame is far from being a good Catholic school, at least Father Jenkins has gone from giving Obama an honorary degree to criticizing him last September to now filing a lawsuit against Obama's HHS.
AMEN!
Good to hear that they learned a lesson, albeit the hard way.
Jenkins receives the criticism while Obama skates.
Rev. John Jenkins, the university's president, was given much grief over his commencement invitation to President Obama in 2009. Today, he sent the following email to Notre Dame employees, announcing and explaining the lawsuit.Jenkins was the one giving ALL the grief. What a sack of sh!t.
later
NDU gave Obama an honorary degree in law. If NDU had any balls, they would revoke it publically. Which is it? Are they all those things you said?? Or do they think Obama deserves an NDU law degree?
I notice that Baptist Baylor does not suck up to Obama,,,and God appears to approve of that (at least in basketball matters). Just saying.
Next step should be to place that biatch Sibelius under interdict.
Notre Dame is not out on a limb by itself...
40+ dioceses suing Obama Admin over HHS Mandate...
“He’s clearly being pushed,,,,”
Now THATS what i call a strong leader. Instead of playing tiddlywinks with this struggling wuss,, why not put a storng man of conviction in his place?
Get back to me when:
1. Fr. Jenkins revokes the Kenyan anti-Christ’s Doctor of Laws degree;
2. Apologizes publicly to the Notre Dame 88 for his scurrilous, immoral and inexcusable behavior;
3. Apologizes generally to the Catholic Church and people for his anti-Catholic actions and words;
4. Purges the board of all pro-aborts;
5. Resigns and enters a monastery for the rest of his life, in dust and ashes, in rent garments, vowing perpetual silence, as an act of repentance for the blood he has shed by giving cover to the Chief Abortionist of the United States and the Catholic quislings who support him.
Until then, he's more than a day late, more than a dollar short. In fact, until then, he's a fraud.

Did they think they could cover up the IHS, symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ, at Obama's insistence, and then receive the protection of Jesus when the demon-in-chief decided to excercise his rule over them?
Love that response.
One hopes that more than just the reduction of the inflow of money influenced Father Jenkins own version of "evolving perspective", (like, maybe his conscience?)
Bob Dylan is the author of the tagline I use. He also penned a line (obviously inspired by Holy Scipture)
“There ain’t no man righteous, no not one.”
It’s a good thought to keep firmly in mind - for every single human who is walking this earth.
Then there is the story of the Pharisee and the Publican.
A careful reading of my post will show that whether they want to or not, NDU must take this path. When they invited Obama he was the newly elected POTUS who had overseen nothing but Porkulus. He was the first black POTUS and as such was an historical figure. Now he and his minions have determined that the Catholic Church may not live by its belief system. That is an attack on Catholicism. The icon of the Catholic college in America had to take this course or forever forfeit its place in the American/Catholic firmament. I doubt Jenkins wanted to go here, but he had no choice.
I wonder why they bother going to church.
Regardless of the recent liberal politics of many Catholics, this should earn Catholics our support and appreciation on this effort. Paraphrasing that other famous/infamous Catholic, JFK, “Ich bin Katholisch” regards the Church’s efforts against 0bama.
Just as a heads-up, few will know who you are talking about by using NDU ... it’s UND ... University of Notre Dame... :)
Called "honorary," but not by me.
Of course the supreme ruler knows better than all the religions of the world.
43 is no more than a tiny representative sample, but it's a start.
I don't know what religion most FReepers are (unless they wear their denomination on their sleeve, in their FReepername or their tagline) but... how about it, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists & Jews....you gonna sit on the sidelines tossing peanut shells...or are you gonna step up to the plate?
Was this the very same school/U that invited the One several years ago and then when IT demanded, they removed the cross from the background or am I getting old and senile and imagining things? - (Don’t you dare answer that one if that’s the case!)
