G. Gordon Liddy used to talk about this often on his radio show. His first FBI posting was in rural upstate New York where there were lots of people so poor they relied on poaching to feed their families. Back then the authorities apparently had the good sense to look the other way.

I can relate to that. Growing up in Northern Pennsylvania in the '50s we ate a lot of illegal deer out of necessity (8 kids and Dad unemployed a lot of the time).
It is very likely better for us than beef because they aren't fattened up with chemical foodstuffs like they beef are in the slaughter yards.
There was more than time I saw evidence of out of season hunting when I worked with poor families. I never said a word and neither did the sheriff if he was with me. All that mattered was the kids were being fed.
