My folks spent the Depression in Iowa where there was always plenty of vegetation to eat but meat was pretty scarce unless you had cash. My father hunted squirrel and rabbit.
The sainted FDR ordered pigs and cattle be killed to keep farm prices up not caring that in addition to killing livestock he was killing Americans.
Fatback and gravy biscuits. Served at every meal with squirrel or rabbit. Father and his brother both became expert shots before the war. One shot ... One kill. Dogs were not discussed.
“My father hunted squirrel and rabbit.”
So did mine. Really, growing up hunting, that’s all I was taught to hunt. My dad didn’t hunt anything else because that was it. There were no deer (in the 60s,70s) unless you saw them in a zoo. No turkeys either.
The government bought my grandfather’s cattle, shot them and left them to rot while people in town were starving. Government people actually made sure no one could use the meat- guarded the dead animals. I understand the government did this nation wide with cattle, pigs, etc.
