DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay in a future issue, it has been revealed.

Co-publisher Dan DiDio previously said that the company would not change the sexual orientation of an existing superhero and would bring in a new one altogether.

But at Kapow Comic Convention in London on Sunday, he revealed that an existing character - who was previously assumed to be straight - will become ‘one of our most prominent gay characters’, according to comic blog BleedingCool.com.

Who is it? An existing DC Comics character - who was previously assumed to be straight - will become openly-gay Senior VP Sales Bob Wayne said DiDio’s view ‘had evolved’, comparing the shift to Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

DiDio did not specify which character would ‘come out’ or in which issue it would be featured.

But Courtney Simmons, DC Entertainment’s senior vice president of publicity, told ABC News that it would be soon.

'One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June,' Simmons told the network.

Speculation: Some Twitter users assume Batman will come out as gay.

Popular: Superman, left, is a DC Comics favourite and Batwoman, right, who is a lesbian

Aquaman was just looking for someone to make that final swim upstream with.

I hope it is Batman or Superman.

Having given this some thought I’m all for it. Seriously. If that is what it takes to launch a full blowback against the gay agenda, so be it.

As Rush says, they always overreach.

Let them fully wreck an American Icon that inhabits the childhood of so many of us. I dare them.

It was further specified that it’s a male, who hasn’t been seen in the relaunch yet. So, probably one of the Flashes, one of the Green Lanterns, but my money’s on Captain Marvel.

DC Comics just killed their brand. This is nothing more than a recuiting tool which will be used to put children in harms way.

There is no Truth, Justice, and the American way at DC Comics. sad to see how far they have fallen.

Both major comics lines long ago went from family friendly and all-American to across-the-board leftism. While I've never been a comic book person, I recognize its place in American popular culture.

I'd totally forgotten about Captain Marvel. Yeah, I could see him as a little light in the loafers.

Thanks. After my time. Most of my Wally info comes from the Justice League cartoons (which has its own continuity).

Whew. So we can rule Robin out as the culprit.

Flash is a possibility since Wally West has never been associated with anyone in particular (okay, i don't know about the past 10-15 years or so, but I don't think so).

With the New 52 relaunch last year, Barry Allen is the Flash again, and Wally West was retconned out.

So you never know—doesn't look like they have any other use for him, right now.

If they make Batman gay, he’s finished as an American icon; super hero!

Captain Marvel always looked kind of gay, but since the character’s alter ego is a young boy, making him homosexual would be awfully difficult for them to execute.

Seriously? It's nice to have Barry Allen back again, but it's been over 20 frickin' years! Wally was Flash for almost as long as Barry was -- and he had all that Kid Flash time under his belt.

Seriously, I hate reboots. It's admitting that they haven't got a clue about their own creations. The original Crisis was intended to handle discontinuity without tossing everything out, and now everything is tossed out every few years with each new set of writers.

The VP and publishers are all not fans of the characters or have any respect for the readers. They don’t “get” the public at large so they just try to offend.

The VP at DC should be fired on the spot for letting the Avengers get this upper hand.

Wally West had a long-term relationship with reporter Linda Park, eventually marrying her in the early 2000s.

Did she complain that things were moving too fast?
