Parents take aim at proposed gun range near elementary school

A Connecticut town is caught up in a heated debated over whether a proposed gun range should be built just hundreds of feet from a local elementary school.

"I'd say total insanity. A gun range should not be put next to a school, period. Put it on the outskirts of Waterbury, or somewhere else," community activist Lisa Lessard said in a video posted by NBC Connecticut.

Proponents of the development say the gun range and accompanying gun store would post no actual risk to young students next door at the Sprague Elementary School in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Nonetheless, the local Board of Education sued the city last summer after it approved zoning for the gun range.

Mayor Neil O'Leary and some of the local council members say the gun range would also bring funds to Waterbury. O'Leary has asked the Board of Education to reconsider the lawsuit, saying it is costing the city too much money.

It’d be the safest school in town.

My grandfather use to tell me stories about bringing his loaded rifle to school for shooting practice.

I’d love one near my kids school. It’d make the trash think twice about pulling a columbine type attack if they knew someone near by was likely well armed.

They allow more dangerous indoctination in these schools than anything dangerous from the gun range. Think approval of fag lifestyles, condom use and the availabity of abortions without parental notice.

When I was in high school in the early 80’s,(Northern New Mexico) every pickup in the parking lot had a rifle in the window rack. Including mine. Most of us wore a knife on our belt. This was normal.

exactly. we are moving so we can be in a district we agree with. The state forced “everyday math” on the district that would have those of us looking at traditional math scratching our heads (they do subtraction from left to right. Now.. try to borrow...)

We will be doing math class at home with Singapore math. Everything else the district will be doing while we keep an eye on them.

we tried homeschooling completely but it proved to be to much for my wife to handle. The age gap (4 to 8) and one is on the low end of the autistic spectrum.

Back in the late 50’s, my Brother took his .22 Rifle to School. They had a shooting club and the Range was in the basement of the Gym.

This was in New York. Oh how times have changed.

Who’s going to protect the gun store patrons from the students?

I live in the next town over but only two miles from this school. The area is made up of businesses and old abandoned factories. Most of the complainers would be against this business no matter where it tried to open. We could use a good gun store and range around here.

Yes—they allow adults to destroy the soul and mind of their children—make them emotional cripples and atheist slaves to base instincts and they are worried about exposing them to an idea which led to the most free people in the history of the world. All free peoples had access to self protection. The millions of people killed by their own governments had no access to guns—none. Slaves of the State have no guns—it is the history of the world.

At my school in Oregon, Rifles in window racks were not uncommon. For some reason "worn" knives weren't acceptable, pocket knives were OK. Cops were not allowed inside the school building without the approval of the principal, and if their purpose for being there was to place in jeopardy any particular individual, they didn't get in without a warrant.

Now, if those people don't want a shooting range on a particular parcel of land, what they should do is BUY that land, with their own money, and not put a shooting range there. The solution is just that simple.

I graduated HS in 1978 from a small town in MS. Almost every truck had a gun rack with rifles in it.

I remember in the 8th grade a kid bringing his rifle to school and taking it apart for show and tell.

When I was on the high school rifle team back in the Johnson (Lyndon, not Andrew) administration, we actually walked into school with our rifles, placed them in the coach’s closet in his home room and practiced in the basement of an elementary school. Can you imagine that today?

It’s not the safety of the kids that the leftlibs fear for; they are terrified of the kids becoming interested in firearms and realizing that said leftlibs are trying to deprive them of the right to self-defense.
