Pakistani authorities have sentenced a doctor accused of helping the CIA find Osama bin Laden to 33 years in jail on charges of treason, officials said, a move almost certain to further strain ties between Washington and Islamabad.

Shakil Afridi was accused of running a fake vaccination campaign, in which he collected DNA samples, that is believed to have helped the American intelligence agency track down bin Laden in a Pakistani town.

The al Qaeda chieftain was killed in a unilateral U.S. special forces raid in the town of Abbottabad in May last year.

"Dr Shakil has been sentenced to 33 years imprisonment and a fine of 320,000 Pakistani rupees ($3,477)," said Mohammad Nasir, a government official in the northwestern city of Peshawar, where the jail term will be served. He gave no further details.

Afridi is the first person to be sentenced by Pakistani authorities in the bin Laden case.

The sentence was handed down under tribal laws, which unlike the national penal code, do not carry the death penalty for treason.

U.S. officials were strongly critical of the sentencing. …

Bin Laden's long presence in Pakistan—he was believed to have stayed there for years—despite the worldwide manhunt for him raised suspicions in Washington that Pakistani intelligence officials may have sheltered him. …

And that's assuming he didn't provide us with a false DNA...Which is perhaps why the Paks have him

....and I'll bet he dies soon....or commits suicide....

With all due respect to President Reagan, I use Iran as the benchmark there.

I wish it were that easy to bring a few folks in the U.S. up on treason charges.

If in fact this guy was instrumental in finding UBL, why didn’t we protect him by getting him out of that hell hole ?

Oh never mind...

The CIA ruse was about Hepatitis B vaccinations. A Pakistan Polio vaccination campaign is real and ongoing. The Pak government is rightfully angry as the ruse endangered and created anger against real health care workers in legit vaccination campaigns.

It is an unfortunate price of war. That is the basis for the treason charge as vaccination campaigns have suffered and legit health workers have been denied visas and have been harassed by ISI agents.

Secretary of State Clinton called Pakistan President Zardari back on September 1, 2011 to ask for Afridi’s release from his arrest by the ISI.

There were 7 health care workers in the CIA op, only Afridi was recruited. BTW, a nurse did get into the compound but didn’t succeed in getting any DNA.

His family is out of Pakistan and he will likely get out too after things cool down. This is why Zardari was shunned at the NATO conference.

We are both at war and allied with Pakistan, Afridi got caught in the middle but his family will be well funded by the UBL reward money and enjoying life in the US.

If Dr. Afridi is guilty of treason, that is equivalent to declaring Osama bin Laden a Pakistani citizen and therefore under the protection of the state of Pakistan.

Worthless two faced muzzie b@stards, the whole Paki lot of them!

Pakistan, and bordering Afghanistan, is the largest remaining challenge in polio eradication. The only other places it remains are Nigeria (thanks to fanciful Muslim fears) and a few, once clear, countries in Africa that have been reinfected via Nigeria. However the Africans are making progress. The once assumed last challenge, India, has been free of wild polio for a year, although not long enough to declare victory. The Hindus are getting the job done. Their self described mortal enemies have not.

Ditto - but “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” applies here.

Wrongs would be righted and treasonous people would be going to jail. The military and/or full force of the State Dept would be working to extradite the imprisoned man and his family to the US where he would be given immunity from prosecution, a new identity, and many thanks from a nation grateful for his courage and help for providing information. The information the doctor provided without a doubt helped save some American lives.

Never trust a 6th century sand monkey! Paki’s are not trustworthy allies and thanks to their gutter belief system they will never be trustworthy.

Please after reading or posting to this thread, write a letter to your two senators and congressperson demanding they look into this incident and if the person did help the CIA, then move heaven and earth to make the doctor an American citizen and send Air Force 1 to bring him and his family to his new homeland.
