Jurors reached a verdict Wednesday in the penalty phase of the murder trial of Pedro Espinoza, convicted of murdering Jamiel Shaw. The jury deliberated for less than two and a half hours before recommending the death penalty for Espinoza.

Espinoza was convicted of fatally shooting Jamiel Shaw II, a 17-year-old star football player at Los Angeles High School. On March 2, 2008, Espinoza confronted and shot the teen in the abdomen and the head just a few doors away from Shaw's Arlington Heights home, thinking Shaw was a rival gang member.

Espinoza, now 23, was convicted on May 9 of first-degree murder with a gang enhancement. He was also reportedly in the country illegally when he murdered Shaw. Espinoza's gang affiliation made him eligible for the death penalty.

Espinoza spoke to Eyewitness News in an exclusive phone call after the jury returned its recommendation Wednesday.

“He was also reportedly in the country illegally when he murdered Shaw.”

Just committing a crime that an American wouldn’t commit.

Terrible..........yes. A family lost a son/brother unnecessarily..........yes. Should it EVER happen?....No.

Why is it, then, when blacks murder whites at will this never makes news?

Pardon me as I don’t shed a tear accordingly. My compassion has run out. I’ve had it. Sorry for the kid and his family, yes...but his own race has brought this upon him like the wrath of God.

“eligible for the death penalty”

So in CA that means a life sentence costing millions per year. How many have they executed in 20 years? about 2?

“THERE ARE FEW SAFER PLACES ON EARTH THAN CAIFORNIA’S DEATH ROW.”

You are correct, Sir.

In deference to Larry the Cable Guy:

I think the head cashier at Walmart does not know this.

Did anyone watch the video of this smug gutter trash when the verdict was read? He’s a real tough guy. Impressive without a gun.

I hope he doesn’t last very long in prison. He’s not worth keeping alive.
