When I was a little kid, I was the darkest one in the neighborhood. I asked my Momma why that was. She said that when I was born she shared a room with a Mexican that already had 10 kids and wanted a white one so she agreed to swap out and that I was really a Mexican.

I started crying like a baby. She tried to calm me down and tell me that she was just kidding. It was too late. It had sunk in. Took me years to figure out that she really was kidding.

You'd just have to know my Momma. What a hoot!

My husband used to tell one of our daughters that we'd found her in a box of broken china at the Berkeley Dump. Why? I'll never know. It was probably just something to say on a trip to the dump that they took. I hope she got over it. Of course the rest of us told her that wasn't true; that he was just kidding. But, you never know what deep seated resentments she may hold.
