Romney Woos Senator Rand Paul
National Review ^ | 05/25/2012 | Robert Costa

Posted on 05/25/2012 6:00:16 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Sources close to Senator Rand Paul tell National Review Online that Paul and Mitt Romney had a private meeting on Wednesday. Details of the topics discussed are hazy, but Paul — the son of Texas congressman (and presidential candidate) Ron Paul — reportedly found the meeting productive.

The one-on-one conversation in the nation’s capital lasted 30 minutes. Sources say the tone was cordial but it wasn’t meant to be an exchange of pleasantries. The Kentucky Republican focused his questions on policy.

Senator Paul is one of the GOP’s rising stars. Many of his father’s followers are wary of Romney, the presumptive nominee. Ron Paul has slowed down his campaign in recent weeks, but tension between the party’s libertarian wing and Romney supporters remains.

For now, there’s no word from Paul World beyond that; no word on whether Romney sought an endorsement or brokered a deal regarding the Tampa convention. But it’s clear Romney is intent on wooing Senator Paul, who has been touted by his father’s aides as a potential presidential candidate down the road.

All this said on this thread aside, I can only see Romney going with bland and vanilla. Watch for Sen. John Thune, SD.

Re: my previous post... Thune would constitute bland and vanilla, but would be a capable VP... leagues better than the buffoon sitting in that seat now.

One thing is for sure. Rand is assertive enough that he’d insist his policy positions have a prominent place in a Romney Administration. This is a guy who stands his ground rather tenaciously.

He can 'insist' all he wants, but unless there is a tie in the Senate the VP is powerless.

I don't think Romney is talking to him about VP, and I'd be surprised if Paul bailed on the Senate in his first term for VP or a cabinet post.

My guess is that this meeting has everything to do with defusing a blow up between Paul and Romney delegates at the convention. I'm sure they want to get most things agreed to before the platform planks are brought up for vote to avoid giving the press a field day (week) on dissension in GOP ranks.

RE: Two white men on the ticket? I doubt it, unless Romney’s people are even dumber than I thought.

OK, who do you have in mind?

Marco Rubio will be considered a “White Hispanic” in the mould of that other Floridian, George Zimmerman.

Herman Cain? Do we really want Gloria Allred and these group of women distracting us again?

Let’s forget the color of a candidate’s skin and focus on what matters -— POLICY, INTEGRITY and COMPETENCE.

RE:

Opposed to Iraq War; no direct threat & no declared war. (Feb 2011)

Would have voted against a declaration of war against Iraq. (Feb 2010)

I agree the VP has virtually no power beyond tie-breaking. However, the potential VP selectee has some measure of power, because he/she can require the nominee to adopt some of his/her policy positions before agreeing to become the running mate.

I do not know about his take on foreign policy, but as VP he would have a limited role there, and would not be responsible as the President would be for directing it.

After our sixty years of getting involved in military adventures and then not finishing the job, We need to think very long and hard before committing troops to any foreign endeavor.

The present Dem Senators, including John McCain(yes—I mean that) are entirely too trigger happy.

Can't stand his dad, but Rand would be a pretty darn good pick My first choice, hands down, is Allen West.

Full agreement on both counts.

“Foreign policy can always be taken care of later.”

The USA was essentially non-interventionist (Ron Paulish) during the 1930s and early 1940s while Japan and Germany felt free to invade, expand and terrorize.

Yes, foreign policy got taken care of later, but at what additional cost in American lives?

Russia can’t be counted on to be passive if we took such an aggressive action, (From their perspective of course)

What does Russia and NATO have to do with a World War? Nothing.

Do you think the Soviet Empire and it’s alliances and it’s power, and it’s global reach and influence still exists?

Sure, blame America first for not meddling in the squabbles of the Old World.

There is a difference between prioritizing your work and fixing the economy first and ignoring real threats as you point out. You need to stop living in constant fear and seek security in socialist rule. With your mindset, the economy never gets fixed because you are too terrified to fix the economy.

In truth, I’m an olde fashioned Reagan conservative, and he advised “Peace through Strength” and it worked.

So in my educated opinion, the US was wrong (and vulnerable) by disarming in the 1930s, and would be wrong in the future to disengage from our powerful leadership role.

Oh, how I wish it were that simple. For conservatives like us, it is, but, unfortunately, there are voters who focus on factors such as race in making their choice.

My pick? Allen West. It’s a win-win; we thinkers get what matters, a man with integrity and competence who understands and respects our Constitution, and the superficial voters get a person of color to vote for.

Rand Paul is among several Tea Party types who would be excellent choices as running mate, and Allen West would be another. Let’s hope Romney has the good sense and ideological bent to pick one of them.

But, personally, it would be hard for me to ignore Allen West.
