Krugman: Scientists Should Falsely Predict Alien Invasion So Government Will Spend More Money By Noel Sheppard Created 05/26/2012 - 4:15pm
Last year New York Times columnist and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman called for space aliens to invade earth so that the government would spend money to mount a defense thereby stimulating the economy.
As aliens have yet to comply with Krugman's wishes, he advocated on HBO's Real Time Friday that scientists should get together and lie about an imminent attack to boost federal spending (video follows with transcript and commentary):
PAUL KRUGMAN, NEW YORK TIMES: This is hard to get people to do, much better, obviously, to build bridges and roads and healthcare clinics and schools. But my proposed, I actually have a serious proposal which is that we have to get a bunch of scientists to tell us that we're facing a threatened alien invasion, and in order to be prepared for that alien invasion we have to do things like build high-speed rail. And the, once we've recovered, we can say, Look, there were no aliens.
But look, I mean, whatever it takes because right now we need somebody to spend, and that somebody has to be the U.S. government.
High-speed rail to defend ourselves against space invaders?
As absurd as this seems, folks should realize that to a certain extent, scientists are already doing this.
Consider those in the scientific community on Al Gore's side of the anthropogenic global warming debate.
They have indeed fabricated a doomsday scenario related to carbon dioxide emissions with the expressed intent of getting governments around the world to spend what could end up being trillions of dollars fending off a phantom just as fictitious as Krugman's aliens.
As the Nobel laureate said, "Whatever it takes." This is the Machiavellian way zealots view their causes.
And this man not only has a column in the New York Times from which to publicize such nonsense, people actually give him awards for it.
When you think about it, that's scarier than an actual alien invasion - unless it's already happened!
Somehow, a fake alien invasion stabilizes the country.
UTTERLY POINTLESS UNPRODUCTIVE SPENDING makes the economy grow, in Krugman's view.
Hell, I can do him one better.
We make a huge pile of rocks, in a location we call Spot A, in every city. We then hire, with government funds, a group of people to pick the rocks up and move them to Spot B. Then, we hire another group of people to pick up the rocks and move them back to Spot A.
Viola! The economy rebounds, unemployment plummets, and America is saved!
This guy is anthracite-stupid.
I wonder if a lavish state funeral for a Nobel laureate economist would accomplish the same thing.
Lying is so natural to liberals...like breathing.
I will never forget the liberal scientists and willing media conspirators predicting Reagon’s SDI missile shield was a failure and called it “star wars.” Proof they were frauds is the fact that real scientists would never say never. From the real scientists we hear, “Maybe it will work, let's give it a try!” Or is this a generational thing?? In my day,...... !!
(This was why it was changed for the movie. Also, Rorchach's capture and killing of the child kidnapper was changed because it borrowed from Mad Max)
Or Maybe he's just an Idiot.
“Maybe Krugman is a “deep thinker” in the same vein.”
Alternatively, maybe Krugman is a turncoat who ratted out his civilization by hinting that aliens have invaded the Princeton Department of Economics: this would explain quite a bit about his bizarre writings....
Werner Von Braun said this would happen.

Pres. Ronald Reagan gave an alien what-if scenario to the UN.

All the way over the edge with this moron.
Re: Call the men in the white suits..
Ok guys, I did see the debris from Roswell in ‘47. Note to oneself, zip up the flame suit.
Ah, but you have to understand that the prize is awarded by a bunch of big government Swedish welfare statists.
About the only way Krugman's "theories" work is the absence of choice with no alternative other than the gub'mint.
Articles that explain how modern liberals suffer from a mental disorder.
Krugman supports the media Lying to Americans to get what He wants...
This isnt anything New.
There is, or should be by now, a “classic” psychology experiment about “what will happen when the aliens arrive”.
You get a group of 20-30 random people in a secure building and give them a “briefing”, conducted either by someone wearing a military uniform or a lab coat.
They tell the group the UFOs are on the way and should arrive on Earth within a few days. But their intentions are unknown, and the government is unsure what to do, so is taking surveys “around the country” to ask the public. The surveys are confidential, as they do not know if the alien arrival may cause a panic.
Typically, the expected experimental results would be of four groups. The first group assumes hostility from the aliens. The second group assumes the aliens are peaceful and friendly. And the third group, possibly the largest group, wants to do nothing until we find out, one way or another.
The fourth group need to be excused, as they are freaking out.
The first group are slightly dangerous, on the Twilight Zone, “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” theory, that they will violently overreact in a panicked manner, having a run off to rural bunkers response.
The second group are airheads who will do what they are told to do, but have no initiative to do anything themselves.
The third group go inert. They won’t go to work, or do much of anything until they know what is going on. And they are extremely dangerous as a group, as they could shut down our economy overnight.
Oddly enough, the fourth group are probably the least to worry about.
The bottom line of the experiment would be that as a society we are unready to meet a truly unknown alien life form, and no matter its intentions it could inadvertently cause extreme chaos, enough to be a threat to our civilization. It doesn’t matter what the aliens think.
So Mr. Krugman should shut up about it.
We’ve already been invaded. It lives in the white house.
Paul "Ozymandias" Krugman
