The race was originally advertised as the "International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race" from 1911 to 1916.
it wasn't until 80 or 81 that it became just "The Indy 500".
It has always had an international flair, not just American.
Geesh I’m really losing it! For some reason I thought the race started at 1 eastern time. Just caught the end of Back Home.

IRL is probably third or fourth tier open wheel racing now after F1 GP2 and F3.
Last time I looked they were using cowlings over the wheels. If I want to see that I`ll just watch the original series, ALMS with P1 cars.
Congrats to Tony George, you`ve made IRL a sad relic and shell of a once great series.

cowlings over the wheel are to prevent launching of cars that run up on each other and end up in death ala Dan Wheldon...agree with you about Tony George screwing up the sport and i’m also an F1 fan- but there is no motor event like the Indy 500- none; 224mph entering turn run on lap ten...

When was the last time something like this happened? This stuff usually gets weeded out during qualifying.
