In my neck of the woods (Southern Cal) Parents don't insist that kids get jobs like it was for myself back in the late 70’s. Everything is handed to them, granted most of my Friends with kids managed decent grades and are in College, so maybe that is their justification??

When my older kids were in high school, they both worked to save money for a car and insurance and spending money. Many of my friends didn't want their children to work so they could concentrate on their grades and sports (presumably to get scholarships to college).
As the economy has worsened, some people are tightening their belts somewhat and may get to a point where their children will actually learn the value of money by having to work for it. Good life lesson.
