Attacks on journalists are, unfortunately, not terribly uncommon in Russia, so it's weird that a radio presenter recently embroiled in controversy would comply with an anonymous midnight text asking him to come outside, where he was stabbed 20 times.
Our best guess as to why 46-year-old radio presenter Sergei Aslanyan apparently walked into an attack is that he's an automobile journalist, and probably not used to the kind of controversy in which he finds himself. The Guardian's Miriam Elder has the most detailed English-language account of the attack, which is still pretty slim:
Police sources said Aslanyan received a call from an unknown number just before midnight, inviting him outside for a chat. After leaving his home in southern Moscow, he was stabbed repeatedly in the chest, neck and arms by a man, or several men, wielding a knife.
Apparently Aslanyan insulted the prophet Muhammad in a broadcast, and his assailants were looking to get even for that. Russian news site RIA Novosti reports: "On May 14 on a live radio show on Radio Mayak, Aslanyan discussed the question of choosing a new car, and used the expression, 'from rags to riches,' in the context of a discussion about the biography of the Prophet Muhammad, in a manner which has drawn condemnation from some parts of the Muslim community, with some pro-Islamic media publishing negative articles referring to the remarks."

Islam started terrorizing eastern Europe starting in the era 11th century. It wasn’t until the Battle of Vienna on Sept 11, 1683 when the Europeons got their act together and had the testicular fortitude to drive back the sand barbarians.

Someone - and I'm afraid it'll have to be a UN resolution - must stand up and say: While it's important to respect different cultures, FREE SPEECH TRUMPS ALL DEMANDS FOR "RESPECT".
It has to be the UN. It can't be just us. The entire world must stand up to this radical muslim offend-me-and-I'll-kill-you mentality.

Actually, Islam had expanded throughout CHRISTIAN North Africa and CHRISTIAN Eastern Asia long before the 1000’s.
They invaded Spain in the 700’s and it took the Spaniards until 1492 to kick the last Muslim butts out of their country. They invaded Sicily and Southern Italy in the same timeframe but were epxelled in only a few hundred years - thanks to the Normans who disinfected that part of Europe quite nicely.
Even after the Battle of Vienna, the Muslims CONTINUED to be a menace in the Mediterrancean and North Atlantic - striking out as far as Ireland and England in slaving expeditions until well into the 1800’s.
They are still expanding south into subsaharan Africa with flashpoints in Nigeria, the Sudan and Ethiopia, where Christians and animists have been murdered, raped, enslaved and tortured by these fiends.
Of course, all this mischief in the west can distract us from the millions of Hindu Indians massacred by Islamic invasions in the subcontinent until the Brits finally took over. But that temporary respite ended and India and Pakistan continue to be another overlooked flashpoint with Islamic assaults nearly constant against the Hindus and Sikhs there and in Pakistan, not to mention the few Christians. God know what they have done to Buddhists in South eastern Asia and there is continuing Islamic attacks against Christians in the Phillippines.
I almost forgot the near total extermination of another monotheistic religion in Iran - Zoroastrianism - along with the destruction of a great civilization there.
Islam is a millenium plus long epidemic. A growing and suppurating pox on the face of humanity. They are the real termites in a civilized world and should be converted or eliminated before they take over entire globe and convert the world into a macrocosm of Afghanistan, Yemen or Somalia.

The problem with that is that Islam REQUIRES its adherents to IMPOSE Islam on non-Muslims. Dhimmis (Christians and Jews) must be enslaved or reduced to third class citizenship and non-Dhimmis converted or killed. Its in their “sacred” scriptures - the Koran, the Haddiths, etc and codified in Sharia Law.
All of which demonstrates that your wish to make them respect us makes as much sense as requring Nazis to like Jews. There can be no peaceful accomodation with Islam. There is NO popular movement within Islam to moderate these views. Just different levels of intolerance.
Yes, they did go into Spain that early but I was more focused on eastern Europe.

There is no doubt that the destructive elements of an Islamic presence remain FAR LONGER than their actual occupation. A lot of the problems in the Balkans between the people there goes back to the Ottoman presence and their tactics of using different ethnic groups and different religions gainst each other. So too the problems in southern Italy and Sicily. The Inquisition in Spain, when it was not otherwise pre-occupied with persecuting Protestants and Jews, was far more constructively employed in rooting out Muslims there and so that country may have escaped the effects of a Muslim presence to a better degree. Also, the slow progress of the Reconquista may have made de-Islamization more effective.
Chaos and anarchy as well as brutality and violence are always the hallmark of any islamic presence.
As for your question, I simply don’t know. There appears to be signs of discontent among the non-Muslim masses of western Europe right now. But not enough to make the governments there respond. I think the European Union has had a deleterious impact on any effective local resistance to this pestilence.

I think you misread my post. My point is that free speech is much more important than anyone's demand for "respect".
The radicals don't have to respect us. But they must understand that if they try to limit anyone's free speech, the entire civilized world will push back HARD.
The entire world must speak as one voice on this. But, unfortunately, I don't think that will happen. It is more likely that radical islam will slowly swallow the West, just like a snake slowly swallows a mouse.
Well, I’m one westerner who is more than willing to give that snake ONE BIG STOMACH ACHE.
If there are enough of us, I think we could even make it regurgitate and slither away.
