Dolores Huerta was among 13 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award and coined Obama's "Yes, we can" campaign slogan. The award is America's highest civilian honor.
Huerta co-founded the National Farmworkers Association in 1962 with Cesar Chavez, which later became the United Farm Workers of America. Huerta has served as a community activist and a political organizer.
An honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America, Huerta asked, in reference to the policies of dictator Hugo Chavez in 2006 "why can't we do that here in the United States?"
Huerta speaks to high school students, saying that making a lot of money is not wrong, as long as you give it to the people.
She has also stated, "Our tema, our theme will be: Republicans hate Latinos, OK? Republicans hate Latinos."
She has also been featured in public service announcements to farm workers, letting them know about their rights to housing and transportation, specifying that these rights are available to workers, whether they are "documented or not" in a government sponsored, US taxpayer paid campaign called "We Can Help."
